Minnow Trap

On another thread I was asked how small a mesh could be. Here is a net I made using a split popsicle as a gauge. It is on a glass canning jar because I have it on display at my net making demionstrations. Based on late 19th century technology, and patterns of the man who taught me his family's techniques and patterns. Because of danger of broken glass I use plastic jars for those I use in streams. Works well for minnows and has caught small crayfish. Tony

My Dad used to make large ones using Hickory bows covered with Hardware Cloth to catch large Fish with. He kept several in the River at all times and checked em every couple of days-steady supplu of Fish. His had an inverted funnel at each end. I dunno whether that waas legal or not back then, but he was totally unconcerned about that.

Looks like a very nice set up you've got there. I like the way you use mesh with the jar. it seems similer to the one my grandfather showed me how to make buy cutting a soda bottle at the top and turning it inside out. Very Nice

Thanks for all the kind words . On re-reading the post I reallized I was very unclear about the gauge I used. It should have read "split popsicle stick" which is about 1/4" wide. Tony

That is cool though and very practical. I could put a rock in the jar and lower the whole thing down off the docks with some bait and tie it off and just let it sit. Tons of small fish around the docks usually.
