Rick, unfortunately I don't think he will stumble upon a massive mound of zinc oxide once he steps into the wilderness

Is it very effective? Or only kind of a last resort?
And would only a very thin layer protect me or do I need a good amount on my skin?

Helps keep the bugs off also.
I like escalators, because an escalator can never break; it can only become stairs. You would never see an "escalator temporarily out of order" sign, just "Escalator temporarily stairs... sorry for the convenience. We apologize for the fact that you can still get up there."

He said natural, not found in the wilderness. Zinc Oxide is natural. Your apology is accepted.

Mud's also good on bug bites--makes them less itchy and protects you from new ones.

Why don't you go out and experience some mud. See if it works for you and report back?

Or carry an umbrella. I mean that seriously. They make a great, quick shelter from the elements, including the sun.

    Clouds and rain?

On the serious note, clothing is the key.
Survival is not about surviving AGAINST the nature. It's about surviving WITH the nature.

You can't go in to nature, nature is not a place or an object. Nature just is. You are living it.

Yeah, that mud thing, tends to get bug bites infected. That leads to giant cankers then decubitus ulcers then amputation then death. Gosh almighty, girl, you trying to kill us?

Don't know if it works on sketter bites but skole or Copenhagen takes the sting and itch from a bee / wasp sting. It has to be moist.

Thinning out the herd, the natural way.
    Seriously...
There are tons of legitimate sources on the web supporting it (here's just one: http://www.ehow.com/video_4459533_us...sect-bite.html )
It's something I've known about since childhood, didn't think it was such a big deal. Sure your bites can get infected. They can get infected even if you just keep scratching. You can also get pretty sick when splashed with dirty water, or eating sushi in a fancy restaurant.

Obviously I wouldn't be using mud on my face in Manhattan, (not that anyone would notice) but then we were talking last resort, I think.

Nice. Real nice. After that I'll probably never leave my house again.
