I have never done this myself but if you look on youtube for "engineer775" he shows how to hand dig a well and build a ram pump and gives the math on how it works. Hope this helps.

Don't pay attention to those guys, they are easily entertained, some times.........

Why do you want to "dig" a well, rather than drive a point or drill one.
How far down is the water table?
    What kind of soil?
    Do you have power?

This may help..... how to make a water drilling rig.....

    http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Water.../dp/159971342X

These are from Deep Rock Hydra Drilling, a DIY drilling rig mfg that is simple to operate.

    http://www.deeprock.com/HD/Default.aspx

    http://www.deeprock.com/pdf_docs/how%20to.pdf

    http://www.deeprock.com/HD/HD_FAQ.html

We used the Deep Rock Hydra Drill for our water well up at our CABIN in PA. It took about 5 days from start to full complete and the total costs were about 1/3 what it would be if we were to have a water drilling system company come in and do it. The biggest issue we had were gas pockets due to all the petrolium around the area (can and will blow the drill and casing pipes out of the well hole like rockets). The second biggest issue were the different hardness of strata rock layers and having to change to different bits or changing out broken bits.

It is not that hard to do, fairly grimmy and dirty job, possibility of hitting a poison gas pocket...but all in all, well worth doing it ourselves.

I can see the human spell checkers are out and on the prowl.....nuttin I hate worse than folks that obfuscate the subject matter and waste time and energy by being human spell checkers... if you understand the question, just answer it....if you do not, then ask for clarification....rather than ramming BS spell checking down someones throat.... NOW that is one of my PET Peeves.......not everyone knows how to spell well, but they are insterested in survival, homesteading and living. I make a living selling things to some folks that are not all that well educated, but are some of the smartest people I know when it comes to living off the land. If correct spelling were a consideration of joining this forum, then make it a requirement and have a test. Otherwise, accept people for who and what they are and help them when you can. This of course does not apply to intentional spammers who shall be keel hauled in the morning and then shot and then for good measure...quartered and placed on spikes at the four directions of the compass

There are two ways to dig a well. One involves a shovel and a lot of time. The other involves a phone book and a lot of money. Decide which one you have more of (time or money) and pick that method.

Just dig a hole for something you DON'T want filled with water. You'll hit it every time...

I think a good dog would do what you want. Found one on youtube for you. Though his work to rest ratio is a little off, he should hit water about the time you introduce yourself to the forum...http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...-Introductions

Oh, man, Lowkey. You are right on the money. I could dig a fire pit at the summit of a mountain and hit water. I could dig a well in the bend of dry river bed and find nothing but dust.

Yeah, I have done several, one with a jacked up Jeep providing "pounding power" and a tripod to hold the hammer.
    I'm talking about "digging a well w/ a shovel.
