Default Foot Bridge Project - or - Little bad wolf's Crossing

The little guy and I both like building things. Just about anything in fact. Since the little bad wolf is big enough for our wanderings and walkabouts to take us farther into the woods now, I decided a foot bridge would be a good idea. It will allow the little guy to cross the creek that separates home from my fall and winter camp. I usually cross via a couple of logs farther downstream but they are often submerged and they're too far apart for him to use anyway. He has crisscrossed the stream plenty of times this summer but now that the water is getting cooler my explanation of hypothermia is starting to make a little more sense.

Today we scouted a location for the bridge. We chose an area that is about 24" higher than the normal water level on both banks because I've seen the stream rise 18" overnight from rain plenty of times. The near side has a muddy shallow area I'm planning to use for a pier location. It should help make the task of spanning the 24' distance a bit easier since I think a simple beam bridge should work. After we picked the location we started to round up logs. A downed tree that was overgrown by vines was the first candidate. We spent the rest of day 1 clearing away brush, vines, and removing branches.

I'll update when we make more progress. I think I'll snag the next few posts to make updating a little easier.

"You gonna take pictures or are you gonna work?"

Everybody needs a supervisor and judging from the look you are getting in the last one of him you're behind schedule. Good luck on the foot bridge. He'll remember this forever.

When you are through it will be hard to tell which one of you had more fun, but you will both remember it for the rest of your lives.

What a sweet deal. Can't wait to see the finished bridge.

For some reason, the book "Bridge to Terabithia" comes to mind.

Great job, can't wait to see the finished product.

Just bringing up a small detail that may or may not apply to your situation.

At one time I tried to buy a piece of land on the other side of the river.....my "Place" is on a pretty good size river in Wisconsin.

With that in mind I had inquired about a foot bridge briefly only to find so many rules and regulations I just gave up on the idea.
Local, state and Federal regs on navigable water ways are just overwhelming.....and as it turned out the guy selling the land didn't own it anyway....so didn't buy it.

My land on the right, land for sale on the left sides of the river......and I should mention that the river get realllllly wide when we have our annual 100 years flood.....

Wow! That looks really wide to begin with.

In this situation I'm going with the old saying "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission." I'm also part owner of the land on both sides and it's not navigable. Worst comes to worst, I get to blow up my own bridge.

I guess the idea of the single log across might fly, and if no one makes a fuss.....
Not trying to put a damper on the project......
