This brings me to the only other point I care to make, the reason you have been getting good results for the past 40 years with files is because you are actually treating them as a simple steel. Getting the metal red hot then dipping in oil will get a usable treatment out of w-1 or w-2 and 1095 if you are fast getting it to the oil. O-1 needs a soak time of 15 minutes at 1500* and really benefits from normalizing cycles. I can do it with a gas forge (although not as good as if I used my kiln) by placing the blade in a pipe to keep it out of direct heat and watching the blade very carefully.

BTW, a hay rake is a good choice. Simple steel like that can be done with very primitive methods. Have a nice nap while you temper it!
Not trying to dis you at all. I know very little about a lot of things. Less than I was sure of about many others.

As far as being a master smith, that is not a skill that is restricted to knifemaking. Most of my work was tools, household impliments and general repairs. Knives were a fun thing I did when no big jobs were present. I was simply doing what I had been told and what was working for me long term.

As far as the hamon goes, I have never attempted the clay process and have no need for wavy lines along the blade. My knives are utility pieces and normally very primitive.

I am not a master knifemaker and will never be one. And it bothers me not one bit.

I just hope Klkat gets a temper on his blade.

As most here know, my technical knowledge regarding steels, heat treatments, etc. is far less than many on here. I want to say for the record that Camp10 has always offered me good advice that has worked, as have several others. Kevin - I'd say just do it and see how it turns out. If it doesn't work, there are plenty more files around so you can try it again.

Any one ever use 1075 steel?

Is it any good for a general purpose knife?
    1. If it's in your kit and you don't know how to use it....It's useless.
    2. If you can't reach your kit when you need it....Its useless.

I have mixed feelings with 1075 but cant give you a real reason why. It tests fine, with an oil quench and a temper at 350* it will be plenty hard. It is cheap to buy and easy to work. I just dont like the way the scale breaks when I quench it.. it doesnt seem like it "worked". I guess that's a dumb reason. LOL!

To answer your question, yes it would make a good general purpose knife IMO.

I was given a couple "Condor" Bushcraft knives. I don't like the grind they came with and was considering changing it. Will probably do it cold so I don't have to re-temper them.

Here is an updated pic of this project. I did some work on it last night.

I'm going to heat treat it today.

I have some black micarta that I'll use for the scales.

Maybe I should change my name to "clcac" seeing as you folks insist on putting c's in it.
