I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

The best boots are the ones that fit right. That is the number one decider.

I do agree with that. I don't care how highly a boot is rated or what materials it's made of. If it doesn't fit your foot and is comfortable keep looking.

I guess the best boots are those that are in the field.

Why does the Star Spangled Banner start playing every time you talk like that and where does it come from? (looking around).

I have the same decision to make. I will be hiking the AT in March and am looking for boots. So far, have not found any I like. Well except for my jungle boots and my mocs.

Plan on a few 6 milers to decide.

Frank - If you intend to do a hike thru then you'll need two pair. Look at the Vasque Sun Downers and try them on. I think you'll like them and they are very durable.

These boots are my favorites. I go everywhere my wife will let me in my Bean boots (well, actually these are called "Maine hunting shoe" now, Bean boots are the hard bottomed ones that are made for yuppies that want to look like they enjoy the outdoors)

They have no insulation, no ankle support and no foot support but they are dry, soft and quiet and the rubber bottoms will stick to the ground like it was glued there.

We are starting at the beginning and going up 20 miles.

The other yahoos plan on doing 20 mile trips 4 or 5 times a year. Yeh, they are the ones not married or with kids.

20 is good enough for me at the beginning.

Just thought I would offer a drop off if you needed it. Enjoy your trip and take pics.

the boot that turned out to be my perfect fit is the asolo fsn95 in wide. it is waterproof goretex; stiffer and more supportive than typical non-leather hiker, but not so stiff and much lighter than an all leather clodhopper.
