Pine nuts are best purchased. Gathering them is a lesson in frustration as far as I'm concerned.

They're used in a lot of dishes - pesto being one. I like a few sprinkled in a salad.

More like pine nuts.
Roasted, they are kind of mello but raw they are a little bitter IMO. They cost a little too much to use them as a snack IMO.

Gray pine grow in CA where im at and have big nuts. I was gonna try harvesting them, but i never got around to it. Im not sure if gray pine grow down in south cal

usually the pine nuts you buy in the store are Pinyon pine. You can also get worthwhile harvest from the Stone pine if it grows in your zone. Most other pines aren't worth the effort.
If you eat too many pine nuts you can ruin your sense of taste for days. They leave a metallic taste that doesn't really go away. At least in some people (I'm one of them).
I like them roasted but a few plain ones are good in couscous recipes.

Man,in New Mexico,we would buy them for $5 for 1/2 pound...I love them.Since I've moved to georgia,Ive developed a nut allergy and I dont feel like finding out if they are on the list of things that cause a reaction.Absolutly Love them...

As far as harvesting them it sucks, the pine pitch gets on everything.
Oh by the way, Its been predicted that we are going to have a harsh winter this year do to the squirrels gathering all the nuts. Glad to see that your still with us Justin
