I got grinder a little less than a year ago (Nov 16th). Before that I had made a few out of scrap metal on a 1X30 sander.

Really a nice look to it and the wood is a great find. Would one day like to get my feet wet and try this out. Have always ben a wood worker myself but I think this is something I would like. What kind of grinder does most use and why? Also is there a good referance book that would give me the basic knowlage? mwp

The number of grinders for knife making can, at times be mind boggling. I use a Grizzly grinder. It was the least expensive of the several that I was looking at. Some day I will build my own with a variable speed controller. As far as a good reference - The knife makers here are the ones that got me interested. Check your area for clubs or other makers. I've watched a ton of youtube vids as well.

I guess I'll just say, ditto. Everyone else covered it pretty well. Nice job.

If the Grizzly runs too fast for some work I'd think you should be able to install a potentiometer in place of or in series with the on/off switch. That would allow you to slow it down. Of course, you can't speed it up faster than the coils allow for. If you have a concern about damaging the motor you might touch base with the Grizzly folks, explain what you are trying to do and see what they say about that motor. It might be the same motor they use in variable speed models. That would save you some bucks and give you what you want.

Finished some pants for the knife this morning. It was a nice cool 39 degrees with a north wind blowing. A great morning to be working outside........I just don't remember the arthritus acting up so bad that last time I sewed leather. Oh well - off to the next project.
