He wasn't sure (told me to make something up). The handle material that he had was amazing. He had large amounts stabalized giraffe leg bone, petrified mastadon, horns, antlers, and on, and on. Some of the stuff he had goes for about $100 an inch on todays market. I'm begining to understand more and more why some knives cost so much.

Crash, I am not going to talk to you any more!

I am going to my room, where I will hold my breath until I pass out, then I will pout for the rest of the day.

Rick - They only use the front legs for knives. The back legs are reserved for shoes.

Crash, I'm very happy for you! I know I should be jealous, but if I had all of that knife making gear, it'd be like giving a Stradivarius to a gorilla.

    Congrats on your score!

you 2 guys set that up for the photo of the gorilla, right?

Crash, what do you use the aluminum beams for?
And have you ever tried Cor-Ten steel? or are it's properties not good for knives.

I don't make knives. Just curious.

I have not tried (or really know anything about) that type of steel. The aluminum beams - I guess they're really large peices of aluminum angle are used to air quench steel. Steels that are air quenched are heated inside a stainless steel foil envelope (made individualy from a roll of it). When removed from the oven they are clamped int the aluminum, which cools (quenches) it very quickly and keeps it from warpping.

We use aluminum in the shop for a lot of the structural framing we build. I just didn't know how it could be used for knife-making being as soft as it is.
    Thanks.

Congrats on the SCORE Crash. Looks to be some good makuns for some of those neat projects that come out of your shop. Got to tell ya, I always enjoy the pics.

btw I hope ya don't give up on the knives made out of the old saws. They have so much character. Something I really like in a knife.

Now for the score. We did this via barter (my favorite way to do business). I'll take some pictures tomorrow of exactly what I got, but here's a partial list....

    Digital heat treating oven
    Roll of stainless steel foil
    Aluminum beams
    Personalizer
    Stencil material
    Etching material
    small oxy/acetelyn rig
brass, bronze, nickle silver pins and tubes
about 40 pounds of brass and bronze
    aluminum
    titanium
    D2
    A2
    various stainless steels
    handle materials

I'm probably forgetting a few things. I'll take an inventory and pictures tomorrow.
Bigtime score...but not getting the Burr King must have been a little painful. Check out the Coote Grinders, I'm happy with mine.

I haven't started cutting up the five footers I've got, so I think the saw blades will have a heavy influence for a long time.

I've got a Grizzly that is working fine. I'd really like a KMG, but at 6k with the attatchments I want, that ain't gonna happen. Camp10 post a build that he did, and down the road I'll probably build one. I kind of collect parts I might need as I see them at flea markets, yard sales, etc.

Being that Lucky, I sure hope you went ahead and bought a lottery ticket Too!!! Just an awesome haul Crash!! That Burl is Tee totally beautiful. Looks "Exhibition" Grade to me. Might be wrong, But don't think so. You might want to reserve that for your "Top End" knives.

To answer another post, Aluminum could be used in a pommel(Butt end) where you don't want a lot of weight(followed by something not so soft), or as "Spacer" material in a composite handle. Same with the brass.... any of it really can be used that way.

That burl sell for $50 a set at a local (Orlando) shop. It's gonna be for purdy knives. I'm going to call him tomorrow and see what he'll take for some other materials.

I spent some time "re-organizing" the shop and putting in a few new shelves. I think I have room for a few more things. Woot!!!! I still need to make covers for all of the equipment to keep the grind dust out of it.
