    Default Trip Today

I took my wife, two youngest and the semi adopted neighbor boy out berry picking today. Black berries are just starting to turn and need another week to ripen up.

While we were out and about though I took the time to teach the boys about Salal brush and berries, Burdock, Oregon grape and Mullen. We then went to a creek and picked up about 30 fresh water clams.

All in all it was a good day. Only a quart of berries but the boys learned a little and it was good quality time.

Cool. My weakest skill is knowing wild edibles here.

Sounds like a good day. Who had more fun - the adults or kids?

Sounds like fun, used to take my kids and several of their friends out on woods walks.
I knew where the berries and apple trees were so would stop for a treat.

One little neighbor girl asked me "Who do we have to pay?" when I handed her an apple.

    Good times........

I would say it was about the same. The first time I took the youngest out picking berries they were not too into it. When we got the berries home I froze them. The next night I pulled out enough to fill up bowls for everyone. I covered the frozen berries with half and half and a little sugar and let it freeze on the berries.

Now my boys can't wait to pick berries every year.

This coming weekend will be the big berry pick for us. We will be heading to camp Friday afternoon. The kids get more into them than the bowls but it is still a fun time. I think we might do better than a quart...I've never seen the bushes so loaded as they are this year!

Sounds like you had a fun time!

Sadly, my blackberries are done for the year. Not much better than big, fat, juicy, sweet blackberries. The good news is my raspberries are coming on. Plucked one yesterday. Mmmm.

It's always great to hear family days out.
Blackberries here are just beginning to turn, I hope to pick some this weekend. I was banned from taking Winnie jnr's friends Blackberrying.... apparently their aseptic mothers went into fits when they found out the children ate fruit straight from the bush.

It is actually much safer to eat the ones that grow in the grocery store.

Can you imagine her reaction if you had taken them hunting?
