    Default Beach vittles

My son and I decided to hit the shore today for a snack.

Tide was already 3/4 in so our selection of food was limited. During low tide you can get clams, urchin, sea cukes, the occasional crab, and sometimes a tide pool locked fish.

    The hunting grounds.

After about 20 mins, we had a good handful of china hats. These are snails with, well, hats.

Are China Hats what we would call Limpets(work with me here, I live in England) if so, how the h$ll did you get them off the rocks? They weld themselves to them!

Looks like a great meal and a fun time together. I'm always impressed when kids are willing to eat more than just mac 'n cheese.

They look like limpets to me too Winnie. That's what we call em on the East Coast anyway.

And ya, Winter, how'd you pry them off the rocks?
You're an excellent Dad by the way.

Well Done, Boots in the field with your son......about as good as it gets. Thanks for the photos. I have said for years that S.E. Alaska has more food available than most any place on earth.

I just slide a knife blade quickly under them. If you see them on the beach, go watch one and notice there is a gap under the shell until they are disturbed. When disturbed they suck up to the rock tight.

Not sure if they are limpets or not, but I'd eat those too.

SD, you are right about that. S.E. Alaska is a protein scroungers paradise. This is why butter is always in my pack or pockets when I go out.

If I end up liking any of you people, I could host a little remote camp next summer.

    Absolutely.

I've offered these trips before on other forums, but most peoples idea of a remote survival camp is beer in a can.

We all know remote campers drink hard liquor.
