    The plastic is melting!

The first one they handed me actually did have "Made by Matel" and their trademark stanped on it.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

Did you tear it down and clean it before you shot it?? It might be residual oil burning off from the heat.
    I know what hunts you.

The real guess is that it is the preservative on the outside of the barrel and action. Most people are not used to firing so fast they burn crap off the outside of the rifle. 10 quick rounds will leave the barrel smoking and too hot to touch. A quick 20 round mag will boil water if you stick the muzzle in a puddle.

What did I tell you , it is that plastic!

If this gun is new and has a parkerized finish the chemicals may still be curing when heat is applied. Those phosphates made some nasty oders.

My suggestion is to shoot anohter 1,000 rounds through it while wearing a filter/gas mask. Call it NBC prep training. It should stop by then.

Otherwise you are going to have to accept the fact that some folks have been right for a long time. The AR platform has odor problems. You can now tell everyone that you bought an AR and it stinks.

Kyratshooter is right, it can be the packing lube, even being cleaned it ay hold some in the nooks and crannies, or it can be the parkerized finish and the chemicals may still be curing when heat is applied.
As he also stated I would clean the crap outta it and put another pile of rounds through it, it's gonna take time to get rid in any place. But the AR Platform is a great one, proven over time and corrected and adapted and cloned as time went on.
But this is just my opinion, I will say the Mini-14 is an outstanding weapon though, and there is a book/manuel called the Complete AR15/M16 Guide and this covers everything on the AR from history and cleaning to charges in loads and sighting in and most problems you run into.
Just my opinions and thoughts hope this helps

Nope not kidding. The BS of the tale exists only in the minds of those that did not hold the first ones that went into combat. Colt had contracted Matel for the first stocks. It actually had the Matel stamp. It also lacked a forward assist and had X (experimental) as the first unit of the serial number.

They took away a perfectly good M14 that I had been using for some really efficient work up till then. I stood there holding that cap-gun it in my grubby hands wondering how long I was going to live. They gave us 30 minutes instruction on it, three spotting rounds for zero and sent us out.

The scarey part was that no one seemed worried because they were carrying rifles that they had not properly zeroed. That answered some of the questions I had about out hit count being so low.

I got out of that unit ASAP. In some cases you can volunteer for more hazardous duty so you will be safer.
