Snow and Sand Anchors

They're made from nylon material and buried in 6-12 inches of snow or sand for strong anchor points to keep tent guy lines taunt. I was wondering if these anchors could be of some other material and used for other reasons?

why not make them of wood, metal, branches, whatever you have on hand?

You can use just about whatever you have handy, even a rock tied up in the rope will work. I have never used these personally but have seen others on my treks use them. I tend to use wooden stakes and drive them in fairly deep for use with my diamond shelter.

a good snow anchor can be made from a 2' stick able to withstand the wind's pull. fix your guy-line around the middle, dig a trench perpendicular to the line in the snow and place the stick into this parallel with the ground. cover with snow and pack down. packing will give supprising strength to stick's purchase as will the sonsolodation from any warming or sun exposure [eg. after sitting through the day].

this can be done in sand aswell, but you would probably want to plant it much deeper if the sand is not damp.

other types of anchors like flukes used by climbers can double as a digging implement. pickets are another type of anchor used by climbers which are essentialy a modern adaptation to the stick, an 'I' or 'T' beam with perforations allong one side for attatching gear/biners
