Default Calling All Canned Sardine Lovers!

Oh my God. I am a definite canned sardine lover, and today I had the best canned sardines I've ever had in my life. Skinless and boneless sardines imported by The Henry Gonsalves Co. in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

They were packed even tighter than, well, a can of sardines. I had a couple of cans cold with my own cold "marinade". (4 oz. white vinegar, 1/2 chopped white onion, 3 cloves of garlic crushed, and 3 tablespoons of fresh crushed hot red pepper).

Trust me. Of the countless brands I've tried, these were exceptionally far better than the rest. Plump, fresh with no "fishy" taste, not drowned in oil - just plain incredibly delicious. Time for me to get a few cases.

Yes, they were packed in pure virgin olive oil.

Not exactly baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet but your marinade sounds very interesting. It seems like a lot of garlic, how many cans of sardines did you mix in?

Two cans. Actually, I went lighter on the garlic than usual.

This thread title sucked me in immediately! Sardines and hershey bars were field rations to my father and all we ate in the field, he never cooked. I was raised on them. Your sauce sounds great and I will be keeping my eye out for that brand. Thanks.

I suppose I will have to give this a try. I dont know if I ever ate them anyway but from the can but it sounds like it would be good. 3 cloves is light for 2 cans?

I always eat them right out of the can. I think I will just mix some up and pour it over sardines in the can. I can't imagine taking a sardine out of the can and not eating it on the spot. How can you do that?

Those sound great! Where'd you get em? And how long do they sit in the marinade?

I like the fishy King Oscars (double layer in oil with skin and bones. mmm crunchy bones) but just can't eat them during the hot summer. <*bruuuurrrp*>

I go crazy with garlic. You may want to start a bit lighter and just keep adding more.

Bought 'em at Stop & Shop in the ethnic foods aisle. I drained the oil from the sardines, put 'em in a bowl, and poured the marinade over the top. Waited just long enough to grab a beer and started eating.

I have no choice. Outdoors, I'll eat 'em straight from the can. Indoors, I have olive oil, mustard, hot sauce, tomato sauce, or whatever else they come packed in splattered all over the place if I eat 'em from the can.

Guys, I wanna' be clear on this point. You need to use fresh crushed red pepper in it's own juice. Something like this stuff:

Love sardines, always have at least a dozen cans on hand--skinless, boneless in water.
Yes to hot crushed peppers in their own juice, yes to spicy mustard. Yum!
btw...Sourdough's a sardine fiend, if I remember correctly.
