Default Another Example of Why California is BROKE!

A $20 Million Dollar settlement?!?!?! That's outrageous. Let's keep pizzing away the taxpayers' money.

"California lawmakers have approved a $20 million settlement with the family of Jaycee Dugard..........Lawmakers approved the settlement Thursday with a 30-1 vote in the Senate and a 62-0 vote in the Assembly."

Abducted Jaycee Dugard and $20 Million Settlement

No more outrageous than WTC victims' families getting a settlement.

California is broke because of the high percentage of very well off people there who find ways of avoiding paying their fair share.

Look at the money the Film industry makes. Broke? Sure!

It just couldn't be socialist programs, running out of other peoples money, now could it?

How much do you pay in taxes each year? This thinking just kills me. The rich pay all the taxes, 70% or better is paid by the top 10% of earners. What is worse is that almost 50% of the people dont pay any taxes. Want to see it in writing?

California is broke because they waste money on every thing and regulate businesses to the point where they just leave or close.

Here's a read I stumbled across a couple of weeks back. 2D and Camp are squarely on the mark. I was truly shocked at some of the numbers. This is a living example of how democracy can fail. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote an outstanding work titled De la démocratie en Amérique (Democracy in America - Yeah, he's French). One of the points he made was, "Democracy in America is doomed when the people learn to vote themselves money from the public trough..." That was in 1835 and a second edition in 1840.

    Ain't it da truth.

I'm torn on this one. High taxes and big government is a disaster but I feel for that poor girl. At five million I would clearly side with the girl.

Here is some info, on taxes, and percentages of income.

    Tax distribution
As of 2007, there are about 138 million taxpayers in the United States.[5] The Treasury Department in 2006 reported, based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data, the share of federal income taxes paid by taxpayers of various income levels. The data shows the progressive tax structure of the U.S. federal income tax system on individuals that reduces the tax incidence of people with smaller incomes, as they shift the incidence disproportionately to those with higher incomes - the top 0.1% of taxpayers by income pay 17.4% of federal income taxes (earning 9.1% of the income), the top 1% with gross income of $328,049 or more pay 36.9% (earning 19%), the top 5% with gross income of $137,056 or more pay 57.1% (earning 33.4%), and the bottom 50% with gross income of $30,122 or less pay 3.3% (earning 13.4%).

What I'm confused about, is why are the politicians voting on it? Shouldn't it be a suit decided in court?

I am absolutely on the side of this girl however it should be up to the courts. If there was wrong doing on the side of the law enforcement, let their budget cover the suit. Punishing the taxpayers for the mistakes made by the people already punishing the taxpayers seems like a lose, lose.

    Agree w/Camp10.
Seems like no matter who screws up, taxpayers foot the bill.
    That ain't right.

Those numbers for California were shocking.

As for the girl, bad things happen to good people. It's deplorable what happened to her but why is she compensated? Someone living with MS has a tough time of it, too. Not everyone that had something bad happen to them should be compensated. If she thinks the state made a mistake by not finding her in one of their searches then she should seek recourse through civil litigation.

    See post #2.
But I guess no one wants to go there.

I didn't understand that either. They talk about what a great job Feinberg did but I didn't understand the whole concept. $7 Billion was paid out. About $2 million for each death if I remember correctly. I guess if it had been my family member I would feel differently but, as I said, bad things happen to good people. Who's fault is that?

    Apparently, ours.
But you know, I wouldn't support that even if it was a family member. Some things just aren't right no matter what...IMO.

I'm more than happy to "go there". Those payments were nothing more than an organized attempt to head of litigation. A bribe.

Can't imagine what kind of litigation it would be. The fact that the govt. sat on it's a$$ since '92 when the first breach happened?

I'm content that the decision is not mine to make. The importance of such decisions should be left to serious, competent people. I look to our leaders and all I see are a bunch of clowns.

    True nough.
Actually, I think we'd be better off if YOU made the decision.
