    Default Candle lanterns

With the power outage at "The Place", we used a couple of our many candle lanterns.
Most anyone that does any re-enactments, rendezvous, civil war, ren fairs are familiar with them, and there are many designs.
So I though I would post a few different designs, and note that they work very well.

I guess I should have waited till had dusted them off first, before taking a pic, Huh? LOL

They look very nice and would be at place in any home. I was wondering about your design. One has a door to access candle but the others look as if they are lifted like and elevator to access candles. Do my eyes decieve me and if not which style do you prefer?

They are all different designs, (have a bunch more, as well).
For out side use I like the one with the covered top, keeps the "lucky rain drop" from putting it out. (third from left)

Couple have doors that slide up (forth and fifth from left).
The others the candle is lifted up to light and blow out.

Most all these were made by hand by various people and sold at rendezvous, mostly for gas money........I'm a sucker for hand/home made stuff, and try to support people that do make stuff for sale to make a couple of bucks.

I have a couple that have been in use on and off for 25+ years, but they look pretty well used.........still work though.

I have seen them made with a tin can,( cut out, and some reall good designs cut into them) a base with a kerosene lamp chimney

They are nice. I have a couple commercial models that use a tea light candle.

That would make a great project for the home. Thanks for the idea!

Good stuff, Hunter. I love those. Simple and effective. Not much better than that!

Some of the commercial lanterns, like the UCO, can drip hot wax into the bottom and close the air holes. They work good just need to be alert to that problem.

If you installed a couple of mirror panels in place of two of the glass panels wouldn't that throw the light out in front of you. It should work a bit like a flashlight (for those lonesome walks to the Pberry Bush at night.

I've got some old old windows that were taken out of this house stored in the barn. I need to learn to cut glass.
I wanna make one! Thanks for a great project idea!

now if I can just get hold of some beeswax to make some candles...

One word of caution, old glass doesn't cut well, I did the same thing, was a very frustrating operation.
So I took my measurements and took them to a glass place, (bandages and all), and in the conversation, the glass guy let me in on this little "trade secret".

I made a couple different styles, replaced glass a couple of times, but the old ones are still going after all thses years. (Gotta take a couple of more pics.)

    Rick,
I did have one that had a mirror one one side and did project light pretty well.

cool candle lanterns. i have a old tin candle lantern that folds up, i have a notion to dig it out and put a candle in it and use it. i have a feeling it's been a very long time since it's been used.

So, with mirrors on 4 sides, where does the light go?

Thanks for the heads up, hadn't heard of Smoke and Fire before......

Here is the orginal two, one built by a friend, and the shorter, square looking one is my first try.
These have been around since about 1982, and as you can see have ben used a LOT.

I did find out the glass fits into the groves on the sides, or top/dottom, but you really have a time get both sides and top/bottom to line up well.

Another advantage to having that "roof" on the lantern is that you don't pick up all those screaming hot wire handle burns

Found these at wally world for 8 bucks and the citroneela candles 3 for a buck fifty! Score! Got 2 lanterns and over a dozen candles. Candles have a 9 hr. burntime! These things really do put off good light!

    CBS, nice find!
They actually work pretty good, have used mine a lot over the years.

While cleaning out a cupboard at "The Place", DW found my back pack model.
Small, uses votive candles (cheap) and worked well on a lot of back packing trips.

Don't know if they still make them, I'll have to look.........
