This semester I'm teaching a STEM Guitar course at our local Community College -- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are taught through the activity of each student building their own solid-body, electric guitar, from scratch. Part of the justification for the College to offer this course is that the skills learned are "transferrable" to other fabrication and construction projects.
I have two U.S. Air Force vets in my classes this semester (STEM Guitar and Solar-PV). One served as a fighter jet mechanic -- he has really gotten into the woodworking aspects of our courses. The other was a F-16 pilot (Captain) who was severely wounded in action over in the "Big Sandbox." (He was forced to eject, the canopy didn't clear properly, his head hit the canopy on his way out, and his neck was badly broken, among other severe injuries).
Recently, the two were chatting during lab time and they concocted a deal...the Mechanic agreed to build a new "coffee table" for the Pilot; BUT, it's not your normal, living room furniture! Check it out!
