Take everything you thought you'd learned about the infamous Donner Party expedition of 1840 and forget it. Or at least the part where they ate each other to survive.
That's what a team of anthropologists will argue at a convention in New Mexico this week.
The researchers claim that the Donner party did not resort to cannibalism to survive the winter of 1840's. You may have learned the details in history class in school: A group of 84 people who ventured through the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California hit harsh weather, were trapped, and only about half of them returned. One survivor told how the Donner party resorted to cannibalism to survive. The story stuck, despite vehement denial by many of the other survivors.
New evidence may show they were telling the truth...bones and other evidence show the Donners ate the family dog, horse, cattle and some deer.
