Default Time To Start Hoarding Lightbulbs

Did you know that US federal lighting efficiency standards that start in 2012 effectively ban the manufacture of incandescent lightbulbs?

Yep. In 2012, the 100-watt incandescents we have used for decades will no longer be made, with 75-watt bulbs phasing out in 2013, and 60- and 40-watt bulbs disappearing in 2014. It's all part of The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Incandescent bulbs simply can't be manufactured to comply with the provisions of this law scheduled to go into effect in 2012.

Instead, you'll be able to purchase compact fluorescents (CFLs) or LED bulbs, neither of which provides the "warm" light of an incandescent lightbulb.

I wonder if Congress and the President are exempt from THIS law.

Ken thinks that it's time to start buying and hoarding incandescent lightbulbs. About 3 lifetime's worth.

I suspect that eventually they're gonna' figure out that fewer people will consume fewer resources. That's good for the environment. Right?

Then they'll figure out that people will simply die off if there's not enough oxygen to go around. Right?

    Trees produce oxygen. Right?

My guess is that their next step will be to ban trees.

I hope the LED's perform better as outside lights than the CFL's do. When it gets real cold, the CFL's are not so good. Thanks for the warning Ken, I just hope lots and lots of these new rules and regs go away in 1013!!

With so many things to hoard, before you know it, you home will start looking like a Home Depot.

The surprising thing about this law (well, OK - maybe not all that surprising) was that after its passage - when those that voted for it were asked how they thought their voters would react to not having the choice to buy incandescent lights - their response - What are you talking about? We never said they couldn't buy them. It would be refreshing if it was required to read and understand legislation before you voted on it.

that's so crazy it just might work.

as for loosing incandescent bulbs; i haven't managed to buy a decent one in years anyway. they don't seem to last 1/4 as long as they used to, and a mild sneeze in the other room will break the element.

We go through light bulbs a lot. The main road is maybe 20ft from the house and we get a lot of logging trucks passing by. You can feel it. The vibration does in the elements i think.

While I use them quite a bit, they do have some drawbacks.

Disposal - very expensive to properly dispose of them. Throwing them in the trash probably has a bigger impact on the environment than we yet have a full understanding of. Drop a few boxes or case of them in the store? Hazmat costs will be excessive.

Cost - While they cost more - they last longer - so it balances out right? Not always. Many CFL's are not meant to be constantly turned on and off. By doing so, the life span of them can be drastically reduced.

Health effects - some have an adverse reaction to being in close proximity to the harsh white light for extended periods.

Suitability in all environments - cold temps decrease their effectiveness.

For me, much of the hype over incandescent bulbs was hype based on junk science. Bureaucrats, in a knee jerk reaction to placate a powerful lobbying sector passed legislation that will have many unintended negative consequences.

And you may well be right. The technology of lighting is advancing. I guess my whole point is - if they are such a great thing (or as they become a great thing), then let the marketplace decide, not the government. There was no law requiring everybody to buy an automobile, and yet the buggy whip industry gradually was left by the wayside.

I occurs to me that continuing the passage of "nanny state" type laws, allows politicians to make claims on what a good job they are doing, avoiding the tough issues.

It also occurs to me that there is a part of the population that likes the candles, oil lamps, and now Plain Old Light Bulbs.

    Oil lamps weren't outlawed.

Ya see, the problem is that not enough people think through all the consequences. This law, and what people think of it, are just another example of that.

In 20 years, when huge numbers of people suffer from sight problems, will "big energy savers" (Think big oil, big tobacco, etc.) be the bad guys, and be sued for untold billions of dollars?

When a guys cfl doesn't come on, in the cold, and he walks out on his back porch, slips on the ice he didn't see, and breaks his neck....who does he sue? Same situation....guy gets eaten by a bear that he didn't know was in his yard.

Does this all sound silly???? Tell me...one in how many people that have Toyotas were killed by a defective accelerator? Think about it.

How many people will become sick, because of the production of, or the disposal of, the poisons that are in cfl's???
