Yep. That is what I am trying to do.

In other words, you KNOW what tasks you will do with it, and what characteristics to look for in a knife to meet those tasks. A beginner doesn't. I think we should at least try and confuse them with all the possibilities to force them to do more research.

And........Isn't that what we want to do.

I second that, good first line, basic tool, add other as necessary.

I say the Swiss army as well, This was my first Camping/Hiking knife I carried (still carry one) That being said,, I did not have the Choice of a good multi tool such as a leatherman,, I think the latter is more practical with the addition of basic tools

This would be a GREAT POLL question (hint hint Mods )

It’s kind of humorous to see the reaction to a question “What’s the best survival knife”. Seems like the only thing regarding knives that gets discussed more is the desire to help and narrow down a recommendation. Just sayin’.

Swiss Farmer knife and mora 2000 are good for beginners I would imagine. The for a batoning knife Rat Cutlery(EESE) RC4 would be a step up from that. By then they should be able to, with a little research decide better for themselves what best suits them.
