The winter was mild and there was minimal snow cover. The weather turned unseasonably warm and the road conditions deteriorated very fast leaving 81 people stranded along a network of winter roads. The roads travel over lakes, swamps and muskeg.
Two weeks ago I was on the winter roads here delivering a load of groceries and the roads went from fine to mushy in less than 24 hours. There were only 11 more trucks that made the journey after that and they took almost a week to make the trip. The ended up using bulldozers to get through to softest parts.
For some survival is a game but for these people it was very real. After 5 days all of your supplies would be running out, the trucks may have been running out of fuel and the mental state would be getting fragile after the isolation.
