Default An intro and a question about a good replacement for rip-stop nylon?

Hi, someone from another "survival" board sent me a link to this site. Im looking for a place that doesnt solely focus on mall ninjas and zombies, its hard to find I guess. Im not a survival expert, but Im not a wilderness idiot either. Im trying to get more simplistic in my approach to hiking and camping as I gain more experience. Its my favorite way to relax and get away from modern technology, which I both embrace and despise lol. I hike regularly with my dog around my house and Im getting back into backpacking. I was planning a trip on some parts of the AT this spring, but I got a slight tear in my achilles tendon, which has proven to be a pain to rehab, so Ive had to cancel. Now that Im out of shape from not hiking for many weeks (and still a bunch more weeks to go) Im planning an nice backpacking trip to Acadia national park at the end of summer and then a few small one week AT trips later in the year, plus regular camping/backpacking where I live.

So, after that long winded intro, here is my question. I have a pair of rip-stop nylon pants that I really like, they are older and still good pants, but they are just a bit too big now. I cant seem to find any rip-stop nylon pants with real belt loops and lots of pockets. I tend to store a ton of stuff in all my pants pockets so I dont have to take off my pack as often. I dont like those integrated belt designs, I usually use a gun belt so that it can hold up the weight of my pants.

Is there any material that is as fast drying as nylon and as resistant to large tears as rip-stop nylon that companies are producing now? Im not sure why I cant find rip-sop nylon, but Im about ready to give up and look at other materials, Im just not sure what is good and what is overpriced crap.

Here are a few photos of where I hike and explore in our area:

Awesome location and you have a beautiful dog. Reminds me of my Socs, but bigger.

I myself have been looking for some new pants and I have been unable to find the ones I want, which sound exactly what you described. I found Craghoppers awhile back and am thinking about trying them out.

Thanks all, yes my dog is my buddy and while my wife is loves nature, she isnt much of a camper, so he is my primary backpacking and hiking partner. As far as his pack, he carries all of our stuff for day trips so I dont need to use a pack. Its about 11 pounds of stuff (some food, first aid, rope, blah blah blah) , but that weight includes about 5 pounds of water. The only thing I carry is my camping / utility knife, map, compass, camera, watch, and a small 357.

As far as the pants, I forgot to mention that these pants would be for spring summer and early fall, they dont need to be cold weather friendly. Id actually prefer that they perform better in hot weather, as I really dislike wearing shorts.

I'll check out Craghoppers, Ive not heard of them before.

The craghoppers pants would be perfect if they had cargo pockets on both legs.

    Hunter63, saying, Hey, beautiful pic's.
Probably a good thing you brought along the guy in the jacket, he has thumbs.
Maybe if you're nice to him he'll carry his share of the load.
    Welcome.

Clyde, Snooper, Wilson, and Lola said "Welcome to the Forums, Jackson!"

They want me to ask Jackson a question: "Jackson, when JC is sitting at his computer, do you lie down next to him and fart like we do to Ken?"
