    Default Carob

I can finally identify it! Now, I see it all over town. Sadly, mostly in people's yards.

If I do find an available stand of trees, I might gather some pods next season. I'm just not sure I'd have that much use for carob powder.

As a matter of fact, I haven't even put a dent in the mesquite flour.

Isn't Carob a substitute of sorts for Chocolate?

I'll bet you didn't know that the carob tree was first called locust. Only later did grassy hoppers become known as locusts. How about the fact the seeds of the carob tree were used to weigh gold? The Romans used the seeds as a source of measure. More useless factoids for your reading pleasure.

Yep. People who don't want the caffeine or fat of chocolate use carob, as it is sweet, and somewhat chocolate-like in taste.

But I don't mind the caffeine or fat of chocolate, and I prefer the taste of real chocolate. So I'm not sure how much benefit I would get out of it.

I suppose I could include it in the homemade atole (thickened hot drink) I make for the holidays, to make it more local.

I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it

They are used as street and park trees over here. I love picking bagfulls of the pods to eat.

Some people say that. I can state with authority that this is a cruel and vicious lie!
