Thread: Nuremberg Dial

  1. #1

    Default Nuremberg Dial

I was watching Pawn Stars on History Chan last nite and a guy brought in a Nuremberg Dial. It is a combination compass, sundial and weather vane. It even had a moon phase calculator that allowed one to tell the time at night, within 15 mins, by the phase and position of the moon.
It was about the size of a pack of smokes, made of ivory sometime in the 1600s. He sold it for $4500.
I would like to have one made out of more modern materials. Anybody seen one or know where to get one?

That one looks very similar JC. Its also known as a diptych dial.
that little compartment on the side holds the metel flag which is used as the weather vane. You close it up and through the little hole in the top you can see the compass needle. Line it up to north and stick the flag in its hole and it gives wind direction.

Nope. It was built in the back of the Bulova factory.

I found this a few years ago. I have not ordered from them, but the merchandise looks to be of good quality. They have many items.

    VERY INTERESTING.

Several years ago I purchased a similar sundial. It's really pretty accurate. There is a tiny hole in the brass sliding ring. You set the hole on the correct month, the sun shines through the hole and illuminates the time. Batteries not included (joke).
