    Default Question For FVR

    Help me out here, Frank........

The brief scenario is that someone is in the woods in a surival situation and is in need of a field expedient bow and arrows. The person has clothing and can make fire, shelter, and filter water, and has a pocket knife, but not much else in terms of equipment.

Any thoughts you can share with us on a field expedient set-up?

Ken - you may have noticed that I'm not FVR, but Gene did a youtube video that might answer a couple of your questions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFyM_...823DAA&index=7

Actually Gene nailed it. I would look for a hardwood branch that I could just break off, tie a string to each end and pull it back without breaking. Hickory would work.

Gene's bow is perfect because if you can't find a perfect limb, two half perfect limbs work great.

I learned from this video. Like many, I find myself in a box sometimes, this video made me realize that it's not all that hard. You don't need to split out a stave, rough it out, or tiller it. I do think that tillering is way over-rated. A bow will shoot just fine if the tiller is off.

My first idea would not be the bow but rather a spear. A long spear. You can make a spear much faster than a bow because then you need to make arrows.

Thanks, Frank! The spear option is really good advice.

I just watched Gene's video. Unfortunately, my computer speakers crapped out last night, so I didn't get that much out of it. Time for a ride to Staples or Best Buy.

Watching that video, the string seems pretty loose. Wouldn't you gain a heavier pull by bowing the limbs and then installing the string like you do when bracing a conventional recurve?
