The prices are dropping fast on portable memory card readers which display photos. Hopefully in another year or two, they will be given the ability to display text files and PDF's. Then you could toss a gig or two of survival data into your BOB. Short of that, maybe a phone that will display data from portable hard drives.

Coming from the IT field I can tell you having a couple of those thumb drives comes in handy. I have a few for various different things...

    1: Bootable Linux Thumbdrive -- http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
2: Installers for Virus Scanners, Spyware removal, Drivers, etc...
3: Portable Applications -- http://portableapps.com/ Comes in handy for reading word documents on a computer that doesn't have office installed, also for having the same bookmarks wherever I go.
4: Misc Documents -- Resume, References, and Lots of PDFs on varying subjects

As with any survival kit what you actually put on yours will vary depending on what your needs are. There are also some visualization solutions that will let you install a program and package it up for use on a thumbdrive without altering the system it runs on... it's a bit more in depth, but here is a link just in case you're curious http://www.vmware.com/products/thinapp/
