Try berry juice,tree bark and roots boiled down have been used as dye for centurys should work as ink .
all in all I think the reflector fire is best for camp.Star fires work great on the trail and I tend to build them more than any other type,but for a warm nights sleep I go with a reflector.
Try fine steel wool and a battery
Dont ignore your car it is a great battery charger.I use a jumppac to store power on my daily commute and use the power later.
longterm I would go with thach. Short term terrain . Have used leaves and garbage bags under bedroll snow did'nt melt under me good insulation
