Honestly I think people know more than they think if they would apply it with some common sense. Some folks are going to have to forget much of the "survival skills" they think they have to survive....

I'd go REI style. Ultralight gear and freeze dried food. Bring what you need and leave no trace. I like to bring small field books to study up on things I come across. A pint and some sqeeter dope....
