That was good for some laughs :-) Very much needed at this crazy time! Thanks
The battery and wire combo above also work on char punk wood. Seems like a good thing to file away in ones bag of tricks in case it is ever needed as a battery and wire are almost always near by.
Hi all, been experimenting with starting a fire using a 12 volt battery, some small stranded (speaker wire), short piece of paracord and an accelerant.

Hi all, been a while since I posted anything. (been offline for 2 months).
Thought some might find this interesting, had a damaged wheel at work from a boat trailer that got pulled down the road...
It's because of that rowdy stick arc welder, every time I use it it tries to set something on fire so I have to keep things tidy. ;-)
I have had mine for years too but it has over 240 hours on it. Generac Pro grade with oil pressure pump and spin on oil filter. Still runs as good now as it did new.
Regarding not having a detached shed here are some ideas that might be useful. Plywood is very useful before the storm to board up large windows then after the storm it can come in handy to perhaps...
By far the best setup for both storing the generator and then using it is a detached sturdy shed with at least one window or other ventilation. Every time a hurricane blows through a few days later I...
Another way to go is to use an interlock on the main panel, back feed with a dedicated generator dual poll breaker and manually flip on the breakers that run the items your generator can support and...
Thanks for the reply. Going back over the install it really was amazing how complicated it was. While Reliance has excellent instructions and videos the install did require a solid understanding of...
Hi all, with the 2019 hurricane season starting I thought it might be interesting to review generator hook ups. There are some real good options and to figure out what system to use I think it comes...
Hi, looks like you have it backwards. It's the steel that sparks and burns not the rock. That's why the type of steel is so important. Simple high carbon steels like 1095 are best. The alloys tend to...
Just wanted to mention my best steel was made from a piece of 1/4 x 1/4 1095 key stock from McMaster Carr and water harden with no temper. I have not tried this as I have a nice charcoal forge but I...
Thanks, I have been learning a lot with each knife I make and this is the first one that I really like.
Hi all, just got done making a cleaver in my backyard forge from a piece of 3 inch by 1/4 x 11 inch long 5160 hot rolled steel. Was not sure how hard the hot rolled was going to be but found out I...
Thanks, sure the wrench is crude but I like the post apocalyptic rough look. Really pleased how the punch turned out. Needed it to make the large punch hole in the head of the bolt so to speed things...
Hi all, had a set of head bolts left over from major repair on Ford 351 boat engine that I wanted to try and forge into something interesting.

I was a small boy when our family moved to Florida from Ohio but I can still remember my dad made some Sassafras tea - loved it. Don't think there is any Sassafras this far south but I still want...
Update on my quest to find fire drill wood. Went for a walk in the woods next to a near by lake and hit the gold mine. Found a patch of willow and what I found interesting is there were dead branches...
Thanks, I will be sure to check more carefully before making some jam. I was having some doubt if it's a real choke cherry as the flower buds look a little different but it's just starting to flower...
I did try a palm spindle on palm hearth with a para-cord bow string. Got lots of smoke but could never get an ember. Might be worth trying a palm spindle on a half punky oak hearth. Both are easy to...
Thanks, I looked up choke cherry bark and found a match. Looks like I can make tart jams with the berry and it makes a great bow drill spindle and hearth. Heck, the way it went with the bow drill it...
Hi all, I ran across an image of a small necklace flint striker by Northern Adirondack Forge that inspired me to make a larger one.

Hi all, been trying for a while to start a natural wood bow drill fire and finely got one to go. Finding wood that I can get to work has been challenging. Here in central Florida anything that is...
