Thanks, compression ratio is probably the answer, assuming well made such as on a lathe and good seal. Why this ratio?

It is a comfort to know that if matches, lighters, fire steel, etc get lost, I still have a good chance of making a fire by friction. Years ago I took a survival course and the instructor showed his...
I have one and can easily get an ember in char cloth. I carry fire steel, matches and multiple lighters and am proficient with bow drill etc. I wonder if anyone has worked out the optimal size for a...
Interesting about how primitives carry a knife. I have one somewhere from an African tribesman made of two carved pieces of wood tied together. This sheath at least would prevent him from blade...
i recall making and playing with these when I was in my teens and recall I could throw them pretty accurately. With stones, they seem lethal or good to entrap. Has anyone hunted with them?

A sling. Loop on one end of cord. Pocket in middle for stone. Hold other end in same hand.
A simple sling can be made with string, rope including pocket to hold rocks if available. In woodlands we can pretty easily make cordage.
I suggest you carry bear spray. If it does not work you might carry a hammer for heads. Nice sharp end walking stick. Pistol handy to use if situation/location is appropriate.
Blacksmithing, woodturning, machining, welding, rc airplanes, woodworking, hunting, camping (backpack), etc. too soon old..too late smart.
I Always take lighter or two for each pack, same with Swedish fire steels and carbon ( not stainless since they do not create spark). I also almost have WWII bolo knife and folding saws, large trash...
Probably then he knows more than me. Another option to his point would be just a sling. It shoots rocks well and does not take too long to practice.
Take para cord or similar rope. You can make bow and arrows for fish/game, or many snares that supply food. Learn piyute trigger good for mice up to deer etc. Have Swedish fire steel, good carbon...
Sycamore and cedar work great for board and spindle. Keeping your forearm tight against your org is important. Wait for lots of smoke from dusts mouldering in the notch and let the coal burn and set...
Milkweed and dogbane are really strong. Dogbane best. I made bow strings from both.
Assuming there are consumable materials in the area for a fire and some sticks, possibly trees or shrubs...
Learn how to make cordage from roots (eg pine) or things like milkweed or dogbane bark. If...
I have seen several videos about making fire pistons using plastic, wood turned or carved by hand, aluminum etc. The sizes vary a lot.
What is the optimum size for a primitive backpacker for a fire...
Has anyone tried using this plant? I had two cuts and used this plant mashed up on one that healed in less than a day, while the other took several days. Minor cuts. It is considered a weed in lawns...
Hi. I am interested in knapping, primitive tools, wilderness survival in blue ridge and G.Washington forest in VA.
Know how to make effective shelters, snares/traps, quickie bows.
