On further investigation, make sure you get one that includes the coarse cut wood blade, as some are sold with the finer bone blade only.

That's not the same model I have, but the blade appears to be pretty much the same.
Very good deal on your model here:

That one looks like the Gerber I have. I'm not a saw expert by any stretch, but I believe the suitability of the blade for a given would have to do with the design and dimensions of the saw blade...
I've heard smearing your body with honey or maple syrup works great.
You think you have trouble? The flux capacitor on mine malfunctioned and caused a small tear in the space-time continuum. Fortunately I carry two backups.
Hi Sarge,
For the record, I just turned 36. I do indulge my interests and I'm not shy to spend money on gear that will last - but as the wife says, I could have worse vices.
I probably...
The way I look at it, a good knife - properly cared for - can last a person decades...so I don't think $100 is expensive at all.
A good pair of running shoes costs at least that much, and lasts a...
Same - I bought the original Leatherman back in '91, and now have the Wave.
I loved the original and it never let me down, but the Wave is a big step forward.
Has anyone tried the Hennessy Hammock? I saw one on the weekend briefly and it looks like a very solid piece of kit.
Understood and agreed - no one is advocating that an inexperienced person intentionally put themselves in harm's way and live off the land for fun. The two categories were put out there to...
Also relevant to the conversation, I think, is that there are two broad categories of survival situation:
1. the "knowingly head into the unknown and survive off the land for a given or perhaps...
I don't have any of the above (though I do have Ontario's Spec-Plus Machete, and love it) but I have heard excellent things about the Ontario RAT series knives.
As an aside, there are "mall...
I'd second that - I also have the S1.
I'd and also throw the Fallkniven F1 (slightly more compact) into the mix as well, for about the same price. The F1 is easier to use for some tasks, and the...
Increasing yield or decreasing consumption per capita in the rich world. For example, as of the year 2000, 31% of American adults were obese, and a further 16% defined as overweight. Canada and...
World hunger (aka food aid) is a tricky issue though, when those countries most in need of food aid also have the highest birth rates and are the least able to support themselves. The majority of...
I use the Zebra H50-Q5. Very well made, compact and long-lasting.
It can be worn as a headlamp, clipped on to my pack or pocket, or as a free standing lamp.
On the lowest setting, it can...
Funny coincidence - I was going through an old box of kit yesterday looking for an alice clip (damn some of that stuff was musty) and found a spool of issue olive drab tripwire. It was a nice...
I have one of those Esbit stoves too. Got it back in ~'92 when I was with the Cdn Forces, and it's still going strong. Folds up nice and compact, and you can store the fuel tabs inside when not in...
Yep, the Japanese have been making superior steel for over 1000 years. They know their stuff.
:eek::eek::eek:!
My post about Fallkniven was in response to the OP, who was asking "what's the best steel?", and had nothing to do with the knifetests site. I was mentioning to the OP that some manufacturers use...
The first thing I do when staying in a hotel - even a higher end one - is toss the bedspread into the corner.
As stated above, it is rarely washed, and is typically covered with prior guests'...
That site is pretty unpopular amongst some knifemakers.
Mike Stewart, the head of Bark River Knives (considered by many to be one of the best makers out there) had this to say (I'll post a link...
Fallkniven is a very well-respected knife maker that uses a laminate steel process that sandwiches VG10 carbon steel between 420J2 stainless steel.
Whatever you do...don't shine a (forensic) black light around.
You won't like what you see.
