How would you be sure that the coyote hole was abandoned? Wouldn't you be a little concerned about one returning home?
I've never even heard of that. Does the steam come from the moisture in the green matter?
It kind of makes me think of a solar oven, though I doubt anyone would make bread in it. LOL
Let's put together a good list of books for developing/refining our skills. List books that cover wilderness living, food preservation, plant identification, first aid, etc.
She can't handle a kid in a high chair. I'm not convinced she could handle a swing set in a park, much less surviving in the wild.
So far, it's the maps and reminders. I'm working on developing a list of medicinal plants specific to the conditions my family members deal with and excellent quality photos thereof.
I'm also...
Is anyone else putting together a disaster book for the emergency supplies? I'm working on filling a large binder with laminated sheets containing information that might come in handy. Maps to...
I don't think it's the easiest way to do it, but it's definitely one of those generally useless skills that could come in handy in a difficult situation.
Bowcatz, I was just rereading your post and something struck me. You mentioned the lack of cold water and losing things in your freezer...
A friend of mine in Florida fills the freezer to capacity...
I remember those red berries growing up. I used to think they were so pretty until a stern warning came to never, ever put one near my mouth.
I've always been the person that got depended on so there's really no room in my life to not be calm during a crisis. I'm also not a very expressive person when it comes to emotion.
I've actually been wanting to get a book about this very thing. I'm not nearly as knowledgeable on wild plants as I'd like to be.
I'm intrigued. I'm going to do some googling and see what I can find on cost, suppliers and what not.
Could you be thinking of tea tree oil? Not that I've seen anything about using it to purify water, just that it's the first one that comes to mind.
This page has a video on starting a fire using sticks:

I imagine it works just fine. However, in a survival situation, I'd probably be disinclined to use it as anything other than a security measure. The size of animal it is most likely to be effective...
Very cool. I never put much thought into net making, though I'm always looking for more multi-purpose items. Thanks.
I don't have any issues with maintaining composure during stress situations. It rarely 'hits' me until well after the situation is managed and I have time/space to process it emotionally.
I imagine berries, fruit trees and sunflowers might be decent plants for this, too. I still need to post the links I've been finding here.
Nothing serious. I was left unscathed by two near-misses with tornadoes and have lost power/water (including flushing ability thanks to power), but have thankfully never had to test my knowledge or...
I'd probably lean toward making spears, first, because it would be faster. I'd take solid sticks and sharpen the edge. If a knife were available, I might try to notch the tip as well.
I imagine I'd be bringing a ton of things like protein bars, extra fire fuel, emergency blankets, etc if I were mountain camping like that.
Strong vines? Cut strips of clothing? Torn socks? Braided human hair? (Okay, I know not everyone has as much hair as I do...)
Very cool that you already had that, Chris. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I've never done any trapping before.
It would have to depend on the situation. If I were camping, I'd already have extra supplies. If I weren't, I don't know what kind of shape I'd be in.
