Cane
I’ve started using a cane. Not because I need one for mobility. It’s a useful piece of gear. A hiking stick on the trail is great but looks out of place in town. The cane can be hooked over your arm if you need to use two hands. The cane is an unassuming defensive tool. You can take a cane everywhere. Church, hospital, school, airport. Yesterday I was watching some videos from martial artist using a cane. Who’d a thunk it. I got mine a few years ago at the local livestock feed store. It’s the hardwood kind for cattle prodding. I put a rubber end on it. It’s been good for poking in the tall grass for snakes and keeping mean dogs away.

I have made a few. One with an antler handle, one with a pig tusk handle and one with a heavy brass hame handle. The last one makes a great defensive weapon.

I have a few, from homemade to the livestock herder (THAT really is a weapon).

The Irish made theirs from blackthorn in response to the English barring them from bearing arms.

Messing around with mine and hitting some areas not protected with muscle is a discomfort.

I actually have a number of canes from ancestors. Some of them are formidable. I suspect one of more were used for more than walking. Probably more than one dog was sorry it got too close. (hint, hint).

I got a sockful of quarters.
Useful change for the bus and wacking someone upside the head.
