I used Yucca cordage that I made, as well as thin strips of bark as lashings. I cut end in half horizontally then turn 90 degrees and cut again. I then wedged two sticks about pencil diameter into the splits like a + . Using my yucca & bark lashings i secured it. Will next fire harden tines.
Length of gig: 5 feet
Weight 2 lbs
Well done. Let us know how it works.
That is a nice job. I had never thought about fire hardening one.
Looks like it should do a good job of making frogs a bit less waterproof.
i used this same principle except i used a small pinecone for my spacer and wrapped it with popular tree bark
Anyone mind giving me some tips about fire-hardening? Should the wood be far from the flames, or right inside them, or... I dunno?
Also, how is this "4-fierce" better than a spear with only 1 sharp edge? Higher chances to hit small games?
You want to dry the wood, not burn it up completely. This shrinks the wood overall and makes it more solid, so it ends up being harder.
Watch the end of this video for tips on hardening wood.
