Farriers Rasp Bowie Knife

Hokey Smokes! That thing is beautiful.

That's a beautiful piece.
Is that a section of jawbone?
-
I believe (not 100% sure) that it is a piece of cow leg bone.
-
Jeeese. A cow with one short leg. Not good I tell ya.
-
Makes em easier to catch and put on the supper table. It's a public service that I perform at no extra charge.
-
crash that is one fine knife there,BTW the bone is a deer leg not cow.
i've used them plenty for flint knapped knife handles before.
-
-
Is it a horse bone? That would make sense if so (given the origins of the rasp).
-
Pretty sure it is from a cow.

I made one of those about 20 years ago when I was in grad school and working in the museum blacksmith shop.
One of the guys in one of my seminar classes that worked at another museum brought me a burlap sack full of pieces of elk antler. In TN that stuff is rare and expensive.
The guy was a Civil War reenactor and worked at the site of the Battle Of Franklin outside Nashville. It had the usual stories, amputated limbs up to the second story window, 9 Generals laid out dead on the porch, haunted plantation house, and it had the fame of taking more casualties in a one hour period than any other battle in the Civil War....
I made a D guard Bowie from a rasp but I drew the blade out a little more to about 16", and I used a chunk of the elk antler he gave me for the handle. It did not have the high polish Crash puts on his knives, I purposely let a lot of hammer marks in it to show it was hand forged and not a cheap mail order blade. It was a good well balanced blade and the guy really appreciated it.
Plus I had a great time making it in the museum forge. Tourists kept coming through and having a fit over seeing a big blade being forged.
