Time of clean out the old......MRE's

Making room and checking stashed food....namely MRE's.....
That were left over from Desert Storm days...1990-91

Bought them from Sportsman Guide and were back ordered because of DS.....
Appear to be civilian versions...as there is't much to them...

An entree and a side, energy bar and crackers....condiment pack ...that's it.

I'm breaking them down and salvaging the salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, cider, spoon, ready wipes, matches and spoon.
Think those will be OK.

Health bar, crackers and grape jelly are getting tossed...

Seems the SHTF hasn't happened yet..so the stuff is old.....and don't want to sniff it.

You should donate the old food to the food bank or local rescue mission.

No, I can't and won't do that....

I would donate money...I do anyway...but would not wish 25+year old food anyone...

Needy or not...they deserve better.

I went through my old MRE's earlier this year. They were way pat their expiration. I saved some, sample some others and tossed the really gross.

I agree. If I wil not eat them, I will not have anybody else eat them.

Well warm one up anyway - you would be surprised. I bet the Entree still works.

It's too late now of course but it's a shame you didn't notice the dates sooner. It's a shame you didn't simply eat them or take them with you camping before they got too long in the tooth. Next time!

I knew they were there....it's just the SHTF was late....real late....keep being late...so stuff goes bad.

When we camp...we eat good...I can't remember when we ever had MRE's or Freeze dried ... as a family...or even a week-end hunting trip.
I have only ever use that stuff as a lunch for a days hike or quick over nighter.


Somehow we just didn't find them all that good for regular meals....although we did do a couple one ThanksGiving just to see what the boys may be eating.

That is the problem with getting old....time goes by fast...faster all the time.
While the SHTF doesn't happen ..THAT is a good thing...but having 25 years worth of JIC supplies....I am happy to NOT need them.

They were like life insurance....good to have, but don't want to use it.

BTW still have about 5-6 left...I would give away to anyone for the shipping....to try.....PM me.

I get a real kick out of telling new doomsday prepper types that I quit waiting for SHTF when I threw out my first cycle of 30 year preserved food, and that was 15 years ago. If it did not happen during the Cold War years the chances are slim to none that it will happen now, not in our present situation anyway.

My expiration date is shorter than good Mountain House fixin's.

I store groceries now, not preps. It has a 1-3 year expiration date on the can, box or package. When it gets close to expiration I load it up and take it to the grand kids, they will eat anything that resembles mac & cheese, Oodles of Noodles or soup starter. None is wasted that way.

For guys like you and me the next cycle of long term food supplies would be eaten by someone else anyway.

Don't know...have to break down a couple of more....and try them...
Everyone knows "real bushcrafters" only use a bow drill or ferro rod....so matches are considered cheating?....LOL

The last time I was "in the field" while on active duty The C rations we had were pretty old. The Luck Strikes were stale and the Chicklets were like pebbles.

Well, I guess there is a difference between "want to, and "have to......LOL
I just don't "want to"....

I think a few years I opened a real MRE from Desert Storm ( a friend gave me a few when he came back... ) it was OK.

I work at AmeriQual Foods. (currently on 60+ hour work weeks) Our MRE entrees are good for ten years, not twenty. If the pouch is swollen, or in any way disfigured, dispose of it in the nearest trash receptacle. If the pouch should hatch, whatever you do..don't feed the critter after midnight. The end results are not pretty.

Boy....learned that one the hard way.
