Hello from denmark
Hi all.. i´m here on this site to se if i can get enough information/help to start planning my trip to alaska some day.. would like it to be in the wintertime because i really like the cold and snow.. can´t get enough of it (i´m a real viking :D) .. but so far my plan is only that i would like to stay for 3-5 weeks tracking around and take pictures of the landscape and wildlife i will see along the way (preferably bisons, moose, bald eagle, bears )..
I do have former military experience with cold response exercises.. so i know how to make shelters, fires, hande firearms and so on... this trip is mainly for enjoyment and picture taking.. and get away from the modern world a bit..
but i´m not stupid and know alaska can be a harsh land for the unprepared.. so any help/tips would be welcoming

Hello and welcome. We have several members from Alaska that can offer you information that will be helpful.

Welcome home. You probably won't see many bear in the winter.

Welcome from the interior of Alaska. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to come HERE in the winter to live off the land as we regularly get to -40F. March is a good winter month to visit as our temperatures are generally more mild by then (still gets -20F), there is still enough snow to go dog mushing, the daylight has returned to more normal levels. So, where were you planning on going? Down in the south central or south east part of the state is much more mild.

There is something seriously wrong with defining -20F as "mild". -20F around here would the coldest @#$#$ day all @#$@# winter. I wish this @#$# would go away for @#$#$ good. At least that's how I would probably describe it. Or hieroglyphics to that affect.

Last winter was enough to remind you why the Greeks had myths promising the end of winter and return of spring!

Lol believe me, when compared to -50 or even -40, -20 is totally doable, mild by far when compared. At -20, a good coat, hat, gloves, and boots means you can be very comfortable outside for several hours if you are even a bit active. At -50, it really doesn't matter if you have all the best gear in the world, it is painful. Your body wants to refuse to breath in. Our kids go out to recess until -20.
