I have to transfer a Mossberg 340 BA. Does anyone know exactly where I can locate the serial number? A web search didn't turn up a serial number location for this model.

The barrel and receiver are about 25% covered with small dots of rust, and I've been over the entire rifle with a flashlight and magnifying glass and still can't locate a serial number for the life of me.

BTW: This is not my rifle. I had it for safekeeping.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I'm looking but haven't found anything.

Have you bought it from a dealer within the past 20 years? If so, they may still have the carbon copy of the transfer w/ the serial number on there.

Geronimo!, the 340B-A was only manufactured from 1958 - 1960. I'm holding the gun as a favor to a client. I got it this past summer and it's in the exact condition I received it in - in a soft case, rusted, and full of lint.

I just want to complete the transfer paperwork and be done with the thing.

Well, I found the answer..........:innocent:

"Q: Where is the serial number on my old .22 rifle?

A: There may not be any. For a period of years between 1930 and 1968, Mossberg did not put serial numbers on their long guns, preferring to pass along that cost savings to the consumer. Early Model K, L, M and S rifles did have a serial number, as did the .22 training rifles made for the military (44US) and British Lend-Lease guns (42MB). The Gun Control Act of 1968 made it no longer optional for a manufacturer to put serial numbers on their long guns, and all Mossberg firearms made after 1968 will bear a serial number on the left rear of the receiver." http://www.mossbergcollectors.org/

How will that work out for the transfer papers?

How will that work out for the transfer papers?

I'll just write in "No Serial Number" in those little boxes.

And then some bureaucratic genius will list the serial number as "NOSERIALNUMBER." I'll betcha'. :innocent:

Sounds about right, the 340BA looks to be made from around 1960 to around 1968.
I have had a few .22 rifles and a couple of shotguns that were made from the factory with no serial numbers.
