I use a beagle for an alarm system and a 12ga short pump stoked with no4 buck.

Sounds as though your system is a good one. I have several options for firearms but generally rely on .40 jhp or frangible ammunition.

i have a few .22 handguns.
a 9mm. carbine.

lets not forget my puppy. he'll fluff you to death.

i sleep with a ruger sr-9 9mm. in the bed along with a teddy bear. honest.

I use an attack Cocker Spaniel for both and early alarm and defence. He is 20 lb of pure terror. Guns are too violent and dangerous. I will not allow one in my home. My gun safe is for decoration purposes only.

I have a little friend, that is a Boxer/Pitbull mix that thinks that this is his house, and we are his people. Over the past couple of years, he's gotten kinda protective. Then there is the woman that is starting menopause. After dealing with those two, any intruders in my house would probably beg me to shoot them......and I just might.....if I owned any guns.:innocent:

The great thing about where I live, is that I wouldn't even have to go to the ocean. Things disappear in the swamps, too! :smash:

A sword?! I suppose if you jab them in the foot, they can't go anywhere then it's a lot easier to shoot them.

If I only had a weapon...If I did, then I'd choose .9mm JHP and a Maverick Security with 8 rounds of 00.....if I had a weapon.

Ya know,
I had my house broken into about 12 years ago while I was at work. The little punks took anything of value, including the pennies from my penny jar, drank my beer, even stole the fillet knife out of my Tackle box. Yes, they got my firearms too. (ya should have seen the cops face when I said "..and 4,000 rounds of ammunition").
My Daughter did some detective work at school and found the little turds that did it. (Good Kid!)
I got most of my stuff back, but the violation kind of changed me a bit. I made some little business card size signs on my computer that I attached to every window and door that read as follows:

"WARNING!
Due to a recent break-in,
this house has been heavily booby-trapped.
Unauthorized entry WILL cause serious bodily harm.
You have been warned.'"
The cop that showed up for a follow up visit was a bit uptight when I answered the door, until I told him I really didn't set "man traps".:innocent:
He said I would not have to worry about another break-in with those posted, but then again don't count on much help from your Firemen either.

Home protection has to start with a warning to help the bad guys think someplace else would be a better prospect than this one. If your not at home, they take your stuff.
Oh, But if they fail to head my warning when I am home! Every corner of every room has something leaning there that could help ruin their day. From a sword, to a heavy vase, to a walking stick, to a baseball bat, etc... just part of my interior decorating.:sneaky2:

You can purchase window decals on the internet that say you have a burglar alarm, whether you have one or not. You might be surprised to learn that most unlawful entry is gained through an unlocked door or window.

The insurance company sure would have wished I left my door unlocked during my break in. Could have save them a bundle. Door, Door frame and Lock set = $600.
Alarms are good if someone is around to respond to them. Most services rely on the phone lines. Most bad boy's know enough to cut phone lines. Heck I had a service that said they only check connections every two weeks (blue stop sign).
I found this out after my phone line was down for three days.

My attack beagle. Any more would be overkill. People around here don't own firearms anyway. Now if they tracked mud inside the house, forget the beagle and look out for the wife!

i just purchased a mossy 500 with the extended tube mag so it carries 9 rounds. had to wait 10 whole days for it but it was worth it! i love it! whats a good home defensive round for 12 gauge?

Here in Brazil it is very typical for homes to be fortified. My house has a 3 meter wall around it topped with electric fence. The wall is mandated by law and most homes in my neighborhood have electric fencing as well. In the yard I have two enthusiastic pit bulls, and three little barky-dogs.

The house has bars on the windows and an alarm on all windows and doors. The fence is also alarmed, if anything touches it the house alarm goes off.

Inside I have a solid wood security door set in a hardwood frame at the top of the stairs that has a deadbolt lock. At night after the house alarm is turned on I lock that door when we go to bed so that if anyone gets into the house they won't be able to get to the family.

Backing up that wooden door is me with my two .38 revolvers. Anyone trying to get through that door will be shot.

It sounds like alot, and it is if taken out of context, but here such is life and this is all regarded as completely normal. Mac

ANY load at arms length will most like be fatal. Consider the possibility of over penetration before you choose. If you have loved ones behind walls, you may want to stick with heavy "small game" loads. Bird shot wounds at point-blank range are commonly referred to as "rat holes". The chances of surviving such a blast are almost non-existent, given a center mass hit. Glaser
"safety slugs" employ the same concept. ( Shredded organs with minimal possibility of overpenetration) I dont have anyone in other rooms so my load is #4 shot.:sailor:

I like my Rotti,she will let you in but not out(watched a grown man wet himself after trying to grab some jeep parts in the back yard,he yelled hey buddy want to get youre dog so I can leave? I said nope, you walked youreself onto my property you can walk youreself out too). God bless anyone who should try to break in while my 3 year old is home.He is at the age where he thinks its funny to punch ya squair in the nuts.

Ken, I agree with you disposal site.But they do dig holes just about every day in my back yard.

Mossberg 500 when I'm home. I Don't bring it with to university. The only defense I need to worry about here is my beer fridge and a locked door usually does the trick.:tongue_smilie:

A significant improvement has been added at the ranch. An 80 pound (and growing) black brindle English Mastiff just showed up and after a suitable period of trying to find the owner, we adopted said anti-intruder system. He's quite lovable and VERY protective.

We have a doorman 24/7 and you can't get past him without giving your vital statistics. Then he phones up to check if indeed we're expecting the said visitor.
If yes, then he gets taken up by a manned elevator. If it's a delivery, the elevator man waits until the delivery is made and takes down the delivery person. There are other security procedures but these are the basics.

I feel safer in my NYC apt. than anywhere else I've ever been, and I've been around.

I have lived in a few cities with stupid firearm laws and NYC was one of them. My opinion was like a man I worked with. We were looking out the locked, barred door watching the locals go by and he remarked it was like a zoo only we were in a cage and the animals were outside. That's the way I felt when I lived in an apt. for a few years, and never again. I slept with a rifle some and it felt comfortable.

I live half the year in a city, Greeley, CO, so have deadbolt locks and a gun or two. Plus walking around, it is nice to carry pepper spray for bothersome dogs - 2 and 4 legged ones.

From June to Nov. I am in southern Wyoming on my mtn retreat, where I have an electric wire fence which may or may not be turned on. Deer, bears etc. go under it easily. Cattle know what it is and stay away as well as most humans.

I have some alarms, such as a driveway alarm. I have no dog, for living like I do, in a city then about half the year in and near wilderness, dogs are too much trouble. They could get lost, they chase wildlife which I love to see up close etc. Not able to see much wildlife with a dog around.

I never feel as free or as safe as I do on my mtn place, even with bears etc. roaming around. I also sleep much better up there than in the city.

I live mostly in tents on my mtn place but in cold weather and in case of emergency, I do have an underground storage cellar/bunker, which here are the two doors in the pics. First the black heavy steel front door and the back trap door >
