Matthew Nicolai a youngster growing up in the village of Kwethluk on the Kuskokwim River joined the Boy Scouts. Among the Scouting requirements was a completion of a five-mile hike.

Matthew's mother signed the parental permission slip for the outing but said she couldn't understand what the hike was supposed to prove. Yupik Eskimos routinely walk many miles in pursuit of fish and game -- But why would anyone trek five miles and intentionally come back empty handed?

Mosquito. In Alaska, this is not a bug at all, but a large flying predator. Alaska mosquitoes come in two sizes. "Twin-engined and Four-engined", but only one temperament - - - Mean!!! The smaller variety are a threat to household pets and small children, the larger kind a menace to livestock and small cars.

Hey Sourdough, this reminded me of your attempt to donate your land to the Boy Scouts and their very ungrateful reply.

Some other worthwhile groups you might consider are the Girls Scouts and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. You don't have to respond, I just thought I toss those out for you.
