Today I participated in the Veterans Day Parade in Jacksonville. Its a fairly large event (biggest in Florida I believe). Anyway were standing around the staging area, chatting with folks from some of the other units participating in the parade. A young lady near us was wearing a t-shirt for a political candidate for 2010. A city bureaucrat told her that she would have to change shirts, as they did not allow political statements to be made. I just about lost it. I decided to remain calm and said There are thousands of veterans marching in this parade today that fought for this country. There are many more that cannot be here because they died in defense of the freedoms that we cherish. Who are you to dishonor the memories of those that have fallen and those still living by dismissing so easily what they all sacrificed to protect freedom of speech. She decided to leave, and the young lady did not change her t-shirt.
