Knife Club

Attended a gathering of a local knife club tonight. All I can say is WOW! There were about 20 people there – all with a great deal of experience. They were all very willing to help the NOOB out. Three different guys invited me to come by their shops and they would show me how they make knives. These three guys have over 90 years of knife making experience between them. Here are a few pics of some of the knives folks brought with them.

That is so cool Crash. I probably would have embarassed myself by drooling over those knives. I am glad you got out. Once you learn a few tricks from those pros your learning curve will get better quickly. You are already on the fast track and now you will grow by leaps and bounds. I really need to get something started here in my region. Most folks look at me weird when I tell them I make knives. They say somethink dumb like please don't stab me, or say something about Jack the Ripper.

It looks like it was a great time and I am sure you came out with alot of good tid bits of new info.

Knife Club

I was asking questions about grinders - if I'm going to do this, I figured it's time to get a real one. We were talking about brands (most of which I had never heard of) and styles. At the end of the meeting one guy said he just sold his old one to another member - if he had known I needed one he would have sold it to me. About that time another guy said once his new one is built he's offer me his old one. 2 X 72 belt and a bunch of other stuff that went right over my head. Pretty friendly bunch. I'm looking forward to learning.

Cool. Knifemakers are usually very helpful. I havn't met one who has'nt help me out above and beyond. I use a craftsman 2x42 a far from perfect grinder. Cost about 135 bucks. Its not the best but thats what I use to make knives. I will up grade to a KMG 2x72 one of these days. Right now I am trying to fund a heat treat oven. Its only around 1100 smackers. It will really help me get future order out faster and will pay for itself in a year or two.

Awesome!! Yeah I have to agree with Panch0, Your improvements are going to be in leaps and bounds!! I knew about the belt sanders you/they were talking about but that is from hanging out at Knife dogs. Knife makers share their knowledge there. It is like your experience last night - a big drool bucket is necessary for me!! LOL

That small blade in the next to last picture is Damascus steel with giraffe bone scales. The guy that made it makes his own Damascus steel in his back yard.
