Does anyone have any experience using "Rust Convertors?" Stuff like "1-Step Rust Killer" or "Ospho"?

I have a 35' standing antenna tower that looks kinda' like this:

It's lightly rusted in a few spots, and I want to get some paint on it before winter, but I'd prefer not to have to sand it (and probably fall and die - even with a safety belt - in the process).

I've heard that the "rust convertors" actually strengthen metal and can be painted over quite easily.

I was hoping to get a couple of 2-way antennas mounted before winter sets in.

Thanks for any help or thoughts on the subject!

Nothing that would work on a tower like that. I'm going to clean up some rusty cast iron pans using electrolysis, but I doubt that tower would fit in a bucket.

Rust-O-leum makes one. I was kind of impressed with it, but then I was testing it for Faraday Cage effect. Your still gonna have to ...Your gonna need a Dewalt twisted wire wheel and a side grinder that runs 30,000+ RPM. I'd tie the latter to it once I was up there!

I suspect that you don't recommend the Rust-O-leum? Any recommendation for paint? The stuff the communicatons supply houses sell doesn't last all that long.

No ....I do recommend it. it gets into corners great. Just sayin you can't have any loose rust first you have to knock it down pretty good to the metal or real close and then I would think it would surely slow the rust....

GREAT! Thanks, Cowboy!

No sanding required! The rust is barely starting to show - no scale or anything like that. I hate like heck to sand exterior metal, because my experience has been that sanding may promote more rust, even after applying a coat of primer and a finish coat of metal paint. That's why I was considering a "rust convertor."

The rustoleum product is supposed to convert rust to controlled rust..kind of like blueing it covers very well so far as getting into the corners...I doubt it has much for UV though so your going to want to take care of that too...

About 6 years ago, a buddy of mine, used spray-on truck bed coating to cover his 30' CB/ham radio antenna tower. Don't know how much the stuff would cost today?!

With my luck, I'd spray half of it on the house. :innocent: I'm shamefully restricted to painting with a brush.

You might want to try some naval jelly... it removes the rust with just a little help from a wire brush and a rinse with water then cover with a good primer. I have used it on just about all metal where sand blasting was`nt needed and have had good results.

Ken try the CarQuest next to the United Front.They carry a product called POR 15. It does not have any UV protection in it so it will have to be overcoated but it can be painted over rust. I am not sure how the company does it but it works wonders on rusty metal.I am using it on my 54 Chevy and haven't had any problems with rust coming through.The only down side is that it takes forever to come off skin,and its a bit pricy.

Ken I've used rust-oleum that is supposed to convert rust, but never had any extended luck with it however, I used a product by permatex called extend. They make a spray-on and also a latex brush-on version. I never liked the latex version but the spray-on worked great. It spray on clear but the rust will turn black when it's converted. It's kind of pricey and it takes two coats so you know two trips up the tower, but it's worth it.
