Well, y'all how many of you have been in scouting (was brought up in another thread).
There is scouting for guy and gals.
I know that there are a lot of Vets here (thank you), but it would be interesting to see how many of you did scouting?

I had the opportunity to be both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, and really enjoyed the experience.

I was never a scout. I knew a couple kids that were and I just never was interested.

Funny... now the scouts have me come to give demonstrations. My youngest son is a scout.

Cub scouts, boy scouts (Eagle Scout), then I was asked to be a Cub Master while I was still in the Reserves. When I graduated college, I left. A few years later I was asked to be a Scout Master. That was in February.

I was then a second class Boy Scout - in rank and spirit. I blame the leaders.:innocent:

I got kicked out. Dominic hit me with a big stick, so I hit him back with a copper window chain. He cried louder so I was asked to leave.

No biggy.

Back in the 90's I use to teach them archery, how to throw hawks and knives at the big get togethers. All we requested was food. For years it was fine, then they seemed to start having a problem with it.

Not a big fan of the boyscouts. To much religious bs and they are kind of like the Catholic church. They condemn gays, yet some masters are predators preying on young boys.

Boy, I just pissed in the coffe pot.

I always wanted to be in the Scouts, but Mom & Dad said no, we couldn't afford it. Found out later that there was a lot more to it than that! I went into Job Corps at 19, wound up in old Camp McCoy Wisconsin, became the editor of the Corpsman paper, & got involved with a Vista worker who took some of us camping & claimed it was going to be an Explorer Post. Later on, at 22, I became an Assistant Scoutmaster. :online2long:

Never was a boy scout, was a U.S. Army Scout and then got a Ranger Tab going thru Ranger School was in LRSD for the 101st Airborne. Close as I could get.
Was a Cub Master for my son, till he grew away from them but have taught land nav, and tracking for them locally.

My son got away from scouting because at the time one of the den mothers decided the boys needed to learn to bake, sew, hammer nails, and paint paper-ma-sha masks. A lot of the boys hated this and my son asked me if I'd teach him the woodsy crafts and to survive, so did several of friends (i had ten in the group) and we formed the Northwest Rangers (Northwest being the school district and area we lived in) it grew for a year or so then of course they hit junior high and sports and girls took over.
Personally I think the scouts are a good thing but over rated (just my opinion) they need a group for young kids that teach nothing but outdoor skills and survival preparation in my opinion as most kids (boys) like this more than building boats and cars for the annual race or soap box cars. But the hard part is keeping them interested, I had success because I taught tracking animals, fishing without a rod and reel, trap making, land navigation and navigation by the stars, first aid, and what to pack by where you are going. We did camping and treks, and tested their skills, and it seemed to work.

No harm done. I am in BSA and I agree with most of that. BSA's stance on gays is purely survival. They were going to allow them, but then realized that they would lose almost all their members if they did. Catholic troops are the majority, and there are a lot of Baptist and Mormon ones as well. With those three churches, that is around 90% of BSA membership. I don't know about the Baptists, but I know that the Catholics and Mormons said they would leave if they allowed gays.

Seems that the majority have a positive view of Scouting in general, I found it to be a great experience.
Would have liked to do more when I was in scouting, but got my paper route at 11 years old, and have been busting it, ever since.(at least till last year).

I also agree that the is a lot of BS involved, and I guess I don't really have a problem with religious backing/teachings. A little discipline never hurt anyone.

I think we could use a little more of this, judging by the apparent deterioration of attitude/ethics/direction, of many young people.
I still believe "In God We trust".

I wasn't in the scouts. Briefly considered putting my son in, but the troops I've hiked by failed to impress me much. The kids were weighed down with unnecessary and heavy gear and there seemed to be a very high ratio of kids to adults. I know it is a good organization, but any organization that big is only as good locally as the people running it. Being the father I am, I wouldn't have my boys in it anyway this young unless I was a part of it. . . so I just take 'em out with me. Better ratio, I trust the guy in charge, and they won't have to load down like a pack mule.

I'm glad the Boy Scouts exist, though. Not all boys have the kind of daddy that my two were born to.

From the "disagreements" you and I have had, I know that you are a little more "liberal" than I am. I think that you have the opinion that the haves, should give to the have nots.......so I have to ask......Why don't you help out the scouts, that are short on adults? It could make a big difference, to one of those boys that doesn't have a dad, like you.

I'm not trying to start anything, I'm just thinking out loud.:innocent:

I was in the cub scouts, webelos and boy scouts. Had to pretty much drop out of the boy scouts right away when my mom found out how much it was gonna cost. couldn't afford it.

Had cousins that were in the scouts and uncles in the army, marines and such so we did a lot of that stuff on our own.

I have no idea what the scouts are like today, but hopefully they're still good and teaching good stuff to kids. Hopefully kids that wanna go can find a way to pay for it.

Cub, Webelos, and Boy Scout. My Son started as a Tiger and is now Senior Patrol leader and a Den Leader. He should make Eagle, as long as he stays with it. I lead a Wolf, Bear, and a Webelos Den for a few years. I help out in the Troop on and off, but my Son asked me to not be in a leadership position anymore. Scouts is HIS thing. He does not like Dad being in charge of the home and his Troop. :D I don't have a problem with that. Part of the reason I wanted him in Scouts is so he could learn another outlook on life to supplement the one that I provide him.
We have some good fundraisers so the kids don't have to "pay" for much of their stuff out of their own pockets. They Do have to work for it though.

You can tell the Scouts 100 times not to load their packs down, and they still do it. After a couple of trips though, they become more experienced and figure it out. :) We advise the kids what to take, but don't force anything on them. Some Troops do it different though, so YMMV.
You can be involved as much as you want with your kids in Scouts. In fact, without parents there would be no Scouting. If you are interested, look around the area ad find a troop that suits you and what you want to do.

Cub Scout, Webelos & Boy Scouts. I joined the Air Force out of High School & years later spent 2 years as a Scoutmaster for the troop on Fairchild AFB outside Spokane, Washington. My military family, the Scouts and my own military career were influences I would never trade. I learned a lot of skills in the Scouts that carried over to my military career (A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful.....). Scouting also helped me choose a career field - emergency response (I was a paramedic for 28 years).

I was a Scout from Cubs to Boy Scout. I had to drop out after we moved but was a Boy Scout For a few years. I got back involved about sixteen years ago and have held many adult positions since then.

I'm currently the Roundtable Commissioner for my son's district. My primary job is to conduct adult leadership and outdoor skills training. I have always found Scouting rewarding.

I was a Cub Scout and my family couldn't afford it with my brother and my sister in it as well.

My Dad was a Weblos leader and we just went with them. We supplied rabbit meat to the jamboree.

My son was a Tiger Scout. But, they were really just a girls crafts group. Each parent was supposed to organize an outing. They would say, "Let's go to McDonalds and then come back to the house and color." WTF!!!

I took them to the Everglades and all the kids loved it. But, it wasn't hard to beat a crappy meal and a coloring book! LOL

Growing up I always wanted to be scout. Turns out I had something better - my dad.

I was always really in awe of people who had attianed to the rank of Eagle Scout - that is, until I went camping with two Eagle Scouts.

I was starting to build a campfire, and up walked one of these Eagle Scouts. I figured "Hey, this guy is an Eagle Scout. He should be able to get a fire going in a hurry." So I said, "Why don't you come help me with this fire?"
He replied "Okay. Where's the kerosene?"
I said "What!? You're an Eagle Scout! You don't need no kerosene to build a campfire!" Well, the first Eagle scout walked off and left me to build the fire alone.
About a minute later, the second Eagle Scout came up and said "You want some help with the fire?"
I said "Yes," hoping for a better showing that with the first Eagle Scout.
Would you believe the first thing he said to me was "Where's the kerosene?"

I could not believe it - two Eagle Scouts who couldn't start a campfire without kerosene! Let's just say I never looked at scouting quite the same again.

If I am ever a scoutmaster, you better be sure that there won't be a drop of kerosene in our gear. My old man taught me to build a fire with one match, and with a bow drill. That is what I will pass on.

If your going to use that one match to light the bow drill I recommend your pour a little kerosene on it first. Little trick an eagle scout taught me on how to start a fire with a bow drill. :innocent:

Well now, seems like those two "Eagles" could have learned a lesson from a "Wolf!" Just Sayin'. :sneaky2:

I've read a lot of reasons on here why people never got involved; however, there is always the chance that new life can be injected into a stale group. Now-a-days young people are walking around with their pants down below their underwear with a cell-phone , i-pod, or MP3 glued to their ears. No wonder Scouting is such a mess! There's no really great teachers when we need them! Gotta get off my soap box now. :cool2:

Sarge, even back in the mid 1970's the parents and scouting was getting to protective. They started being a den mother in a house organization down here. They made it so you didn't camp until you were a Weblos.

FVR, there are some boys that don't need scouting. But they are generally the type of boys that scouting needs. You and your son would make great additions. It just depends on if you want to help out other boys beyond just your own. It also helps your son with giving him an opportunity to be a leader. It is hard to be a leader with no one to lead. That doesn't mean scouting is the only good option, just another one to choose from. You can give a boy all the teachings that scouting offers without scouting, it just might be more difficult.

Just remember that BSA is an organization that is run by people. There are a few people that are paid, but most are volunteer. They make mistakes, and sometimes have no clue. I have seen scoutmasters who don't know how to light a fire, and round table commissioners who also had terrible fire skills and were teaching it at leadership training. That is what you get with volunteers.

Scouts and Venturers here... good times.

Okay... Venturers was probably more fun overall but what's to argue about with a warm curvy tentbuddy and a cup canteen full of vodka ;)

I can still remember the silence falling over a mass camp site during an overnight navigation excercise when someone decided the only sensible thing to do with a half empty coleman cylinder was drop it in a firepit...followed by a dozen other kiddlywinks having to try it out for themselves.

You still can't camp until you are a weblos, and you have to have your parents with you. But, that is a good thing. I take 12 year olds all the time, and wouldn't want any younger. I also disagree with the whole tiger cub program. They are too young. BSA obviously knows they are too young, otherwise they wouldn't require parents all the time. They are being protective...of the leaders sanity.

can someone clue me in as to what a "weblos" is? Don't have that here.

Certainly the whole "evil scoutmaster" thing is still around as far as jokes go but still plenty of kids in Scouts here. Certainly no mandatory parental involvement for kids of a reasonable age, of course parents are welcome to attend but the whole point is to send the kids off kayaking or starting fires for the weekend while you have a wine soaked weekend :D

I mean really, if someone is going to abuse your kids statistically it is more likely to be yourself, your spouse, your near family or friends than someone that is already in most cases hyper-worried about getting all these little ferals home in one piece.

Aussie Scouting does place a fair bit of emphasis on typical "don't be alone in a room with a child" kind of stuff.. basic liability and duty of care... but for every horror story are a hundred thousand kids getting to smell some woodsmoke and go for a walk.

Basically, Weblos are 10 year olds. Some organizations (like mine) separate the 11 yr olds as well. It goes more with child development. 8 and 9 yr olds are very similar and work well together, but 10 yr olds don't mix too well with them. That is usually around growth spurt time. The same with 10 and 11. 10 and 11 are two different worlds. 11 and 12 is also different. I sometimes mix our 11, 12, 13 year olds in activities. The 11 year olds are way out of place physically, and mentally. There are exceptions, but generally. At 14 boys hit another growth spurt. They also start looking at girls. By 15 their feet are usually as big as they will get, so they stop being so clumsy and more coordinated. Anyways, most scouting organizations recognize these age differences and separate into groups accordingly.
