A 17-year-old Eagle Scout in upstate New York has been barred from stepping foot on school grounds for 20 days — for keeping a 2-inch pocketknife locked in a survival kit in his car.

When I was in high school, I ALWAYS carried a knife on me just like all of the other guys. Though I mainly only carried a ~2" blade while they usually carried ~3 or a little longer.

Where I attend and work now, they also have a zero tolerance policy and I can't count the times that I've had to pull out a knife to open packages, cut boxes, rubber hoses, and general lab cutting. Not a single time have I been questioned and I've even had a professor ask if I would cut hoses and wires. I now carry 3 on my persons, the same ~2", 3" and a ~4". If they just checked my car, they would be a whole lot more and bigger ones.

I won't go into details, but I was also cut on school grounds by a friend of mine on the wrist and needed stitches. The police tried to get me to press charges after I repeatedly told them no. They were going to try to expel my friend, but because his step-father was the manager of the Super Wal-Mart in town, they only put him into Alternative School for the rest of the year.

that's taking things quite too far.

as an aside, i carried a knife in school, i just never got caught with it. i never put, or tried to put it inside another person, no harm, no foul.

Well I have carried a knife for 40 years....Everywhere I have gone,a knife has gone.School, Church, Courthouse, Post Office, Police station, Supermarket, Airlines, and even Airports. This is IMO one of the most stupid and controlling laws of our times. Let's see, in 40 years of carrying a knife, I have cut 3 people. 1 Who deserved it, one who didn't(accident), and myself more times than there are words in my post.(@80x)

I dunno... A pocketknife is one of the things I was taught as a little kid that every man needs to have with him all the time. as soon as I was responsible enough to carry one, my dad got me a swiss army knife. after a few months of carrying the bulky and mostly useless thing, I asked if I could get one like his. so the following christmas he got me a 3 blade folding Old Timer. I've had countless knives since then and have only cut one person (on accident) other than myself. It's not a weapon... it's a way of life and a bare essential for anyone intending to do anything for themself. just my 2 cents.
nowadays they lock you up if you get caught with one at school. I can only blame society for not teaching responsible knifing (whatever) to kids who think they all got something to prove. seems they quit teaching them about guns too, colombine anyone?

buncha pacifists. disgusting. especially since it was locked away AND the guy was a scout... i'm rambling.

I carry a 3" folder on me all the time,and everyone at work has at one time or another borrowed it to open boxes or cut platic off of skids,knives are not banned but guns on the other hand,even in my truck,my opinion on that is stay outta my truck,it aint hurting no one,and they will have to fire me before I allow them to search my truck!



Was target shooting last weekend,and my grandson wanted to shoot so we set him up a BIG target and he hit it,one proud little guy he was.

A knife? Growing up in Oklahoma we all had knives. (Class of '92)

Matter of fact the fad was to have your most expensive/powerful rifle in a gun rack in the back window of your pick up for everyone to see. Amazing how life has changed, back then you touched someone's gun you got punched in the nose. Now physical violence is so unforgivable but school shooting are no longer shocking.

Amazing. Any other redneck remember these days? Or is it just me?

a,I remember thm,there was not a pickup truck in the arking lot at school that didn't have a gun rack and at least one gun in it,no one locked their truck doors and not one gun stolen or used against another person.

The news this morning is that the morons in the School district rescinded the possible 45 days in reform school punishment

I think the "zero tolerance rule" on things is just used to keep administrators from actually using common sense

It's hard to have an "all or none" rule of any type. It leaves no room for the gray areas that are clearly out there. It's fine to have a 0 tolerance rule but for God's sake use your brain for something more than a hat rack. This stuff is like writing a guy a speeding ticket for being 1/4 mph over the limit.

It's hard to have an "all or none" rule of any type. It leaves no room for the gray areas that are clearly out there. It's fine to have a 0 tolerance rule but for God's sake use your brain for something more than a hat rack. This stuff is like writing a guy a speeding ticket for being 1/4 mph over the limit.
Gray areas like rubber bands Rick?? My oldest son got an in school suspension in 8th grade for emptyig his pockets into the trash can at school,he had been helping his dad with a paper route,his pockets were full of paper bits and a rubber band that was for banding a paper,teacher dug it out of the trash,and took him and the band to the office,how rediculous is that?!

I've always carried a pocketknife. I took one to show and tell in the 3rd grade. I'm not even sure if carrying a pocketknife is still legal here. concealed weapon? LOL!

I got stopped/ searched by the police in the 10th grade with a texas toothpick in my pocket. They asked me what is was for, I said "huntin'". LOL! I had just watched the movie "First Blood" a few days earlier. They took the knife. I wasn't doin anything wrong, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The 97% that voted NO were probably voting for a harsher punishment.

Poco,she said it COULD be used as a weapon,I kept him home from school the day he was supposed to serve the detention,told them the reasons WHY I kept him home,he never actually had to serve the in school because they KNOW I woulda went all out on them!

LOL...I remember the "guns in school" talk. It was something like..."I know some of you guys are huntin' before school....but technically you're not supposed to have guns on school property....so before you get here, in the mornings, put your guns behind your seat, so that if anyone walks through the parking lot, they don't see 'em."

Well I attended Public School in Chicago for awhile & when the regular teacher, who ruled with an iron fist, took several months of medical leave the school kept sending in replacement subs. The really mean students would wait until the teacher turned to write something on the blackboard & then throw spitballs, heavy text books at her/him, narrowly missing them. A rubber band made a great improvised slingshot using bent staples & paper clips for ammo. I had switch-blade knives as well as a zip-gun shoved in my face from time to time. If anyone there WAS a Boy Scout, they weren't talking as they would have been roasted alive at their own campfire! :cool2:

Either way Sarge,he had thrown it away,not using it for nefarius reasons,she dug it out of the trash can in order to have "ammunition" against him,the nly 2 times it was visible is when it left his pocket,and when she dug it out,oh and by the way,rubber bands are a requirement in some classes.....

While I was in HS, they got a new Spanish teacher. The kids were just horrible to him and the school did nothing to try and prevent it. I wasn't one of his students, but I would have never treated him like the other students did.

The kids:
Threw books and hit him
Stole his hubcaps
Hit him with paper wasps
Put tobacco spit in his coffee
and other things that I'm sure I don't want to know about.

And this was happening in a school of less than 900 students and a county of a little more than 20,000.

I was kidding about the 97% part, but these days you never know.

I don't agree w' kids getting suspended for knives or rubberbands unless they're using em to do bad.

Where I live, people find out I'm carrying a pocketknife and although they don't freak out you can tell in the back of their mind the wheels are turning. Most people I know don't own knives, other than kitchen kinves, and have very little understanding of hunting, fishing or even camping.

In my school a rubberband was far more dangerous than a 2" pocketknife. Heck, paper airplanes were used as lethal weapons. Kids would put razors, slivers of aluminum pop cans, and pins in the noses and wingtips and chuck em down the stairwells between classes. Paperwads with a pin stuck thru and a rubberband to launch em...HEADS UP!

I grew up in the country carried a pocket knife starting in 3rd or 4th grade. 1970-71. Where I went to high school rural area. 90% of the students that drove to school me included when I got old enough. Drove pikup trucks and about 75% of them had at least 1 rifle or shotgun in the rack in the rear window. There was NEVER an incident of violence involving a knife of gun in all the years I went to school and Never one up until the high school closed in 1994!! Imagine that! IMO things like the suspension are getting out of hand.

I'm an elementary teacher in Vegas. We have the same zero tolerance policy. I have had to suspend kids that bring knives to school. However, The kids that "brought it to peel and apple", "went camping and forgot it was there" etc and proved they meant no ill harm to be done were back in school the next day. Parents were called in and the knives were returned.

There have been cases that a kid threatened to kill another student after showing them the knife and another one a kid put a knife around another kids throat and stated, "This is what I 'm going to do in front of the cameras." (Harry Reid was here that day with more cops and body guards that I could count. Not a good day for that kid.)

I guess the point to my rambling is that yet again lawyers have F'd everything up and now "we" are stuck with blanket policies that are supposed to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside because there is a new buzz word being used that will "scare" students and make them think twice about bringing a "weapon" to school.

My parting thoughts... Do they really think the gang bangers that go to school care there is a zero tolerance policy?

Different times for sure than when I grew up. Granted it was a po-donk town in Upstate NY but I remember taking my senior picture with my shotgun and then handing it to the Principal to keep in his office because we were going deer hunting after school.

We had surprisingly few problems in the monastery where I went to school. I say surprisingly because some of those monks were bad to the bone. Fortunately, they took a vow of silence so they could only make hand gestures. But some of them we won't discuss.
