Moose expert question

Sourdough, WE and any other moosologists out there, what's your take on this: we found a broken-off moose antler a few hundred yards from the cabin. How and why???
There was a bit up churned up soil and a gash in a sawed-off poplar stump, no other clues. Somehow I can't imagine that it broke off like that during a fight. But would a healthy antler break off by sparring with a tree? Last winter was hard on the moose, could that have resulted in more brittle antler growth?

I watched two bull moose fight one time WW, that could have done, they get those antlers tangled up and man that's a lot of force when they have to start tussling around, I would suspect if it was a fight though you'd see a lot of churned up ground, not just a bit, so, might have been a really not too bright bull losing a fight with a tree.

I guess you're right Trax, after looking through my "moose bible" and not finding any reference to broken off antlers as a result of fights I ended up reading something about it at the end of that book.
We just never saw anything other than broken off tines so far and the whacked off palm was so impressive...wow, crazy amount of force!!!

sorry so late to the party but yup thats probably what happened, look in chapter 14 of your book that may help, i am sure it has something to do with poor genetics and poor nutrtition

That's a good possibility, or it could be that he just got his a$$ handed to him by a tougher moose.

They can break them off in a fight, but it is very rare. If it was a fight you would have heard it, they are very loud, at least any I have seen. I have even read that some get hooked together and both will die, so breaking off in a fight, like I said, is rare. Poor nutrition can cause the bones to weaken, this may be the problem. Could it have been a cut? It looks to clean to be a break. Was there hunters in the area who may have lost it there? Usually if it falls off or even breaks it will do so at the base, where it joins the skill. Nice find by the way.

No, it definitely broke off, it's not been cut off by anyone.
The more we thought and read about it, my hypothesis is that the harsh winter and record hot summer may have contributed to poorer browse than normal (also hardly any cows with twins this year and when we compared the antler's of the moose we shot this year with the one we got last year, there is quite a difference in size and thickness, although both were 1 1/2 year-olds), so that maybe the antlers of some bulls this fall are less sturdy/less developed.
Maybe that guy got the antler injured in a fight and then broke it off against a tree or stump (I can post the pictures of the stump and a tree with gashes one of these days). Because antler palms are concave, I think it must have got whacked really good from the side or below to break and another moose would rather be pushing against it from the front or top.

I am totally ignorant of moose. Do the antlers have any sort of blood flow into them? The picture sort of looks like fresh blood. I know the antlers are composed of collagen and I thought they grew much like human finger nails. But after looking at the picture it sure looks like fresh blood on the antler.

Yes there was blood in the centre of the break. I don't know much about antlers either but from what this one looks like it seems that even after the velvet is off and when the antler should have stopped growing (I suppose they stop growing once the velvet is off??), there are still operating blood vessels in the core of the antler.
The blood wasn't smeared on from an injury by the looks of it because it's centred right in the break, nothing along the edges.

I lived in Alaska for about 3 years and have had my fair share of Moose run ins.
I'm almost positive what happened was that he probably took it off cause it was bothering him, then he had 1 to many drinks and forgot where he put it....
Just a theory.....I have been wrong before...
