View Full Version : downside of all this convenience

only a small problem really, but i was stoked this afternoon.

i had cheese enchiladas planned.

i get everything ready, begin prepping, make my sauce, some chilies, tomatoes and onions sauteed to stuff with the jack cheese.

last step before preheating the oven; prepping the tortillas in hot oil.

the tortillas where bought at winco two days ago, expiration date of the 10th. sounds good untill i open them.

you know that smell you get if you let the old dishwater sit over night, the smell of the rancid food particles at the bottom as you pour it all out? same smell, emanating from the bag of tortilla.

is winco a convenient place to shop, with a nice variety and fair prices? certainly. is it too big to keep a good track of freshness of a given perishable item? probably.

is this a rant against giant grocery stores? well; if you shop at a small grocer/baker and they don't know what condition their merchandise is in, at least there's less excuse and a person who might remember your feedback at day's end.

Wait a minute. You're the guy that eats fungi everyone has to look up. You grow stuff in a petri dish. You make concoctions that bubble and ferment and then drink it. And you're complaining about a little smell. (head slap).

One might infer that his penchant for less than customary fare only strengthens the argument for how badly he thought the bag smelled, Rick. This ain't no sissy nose we're talkin' bout here, know what I mean?

and stop doind all that head slapping and head shaking, you're gonna set your ears to ringing....

hey; if it where Trappist cheese smelling like that i'd assume it was meant to. call me old fashioned but i like a nice parched corn aroma to come from my tortilla.

dang it, now every time someone mentions Trappists they're gonna to have to clarify whether they're referring to the monks or the cheese, way to go canid.

Or the beer, or the caskets, or the preserves.

i think they had a sort of 'if it kills me it was god's will, and if not it'll make me stronger' philosophy of food.

why else would they need all the caskets..?

Is there anything we can do to change "God's will"? I'm not certain I like the sound of that, "if it kills me" part.

Now that sounds about like my speed. The older I get - that whole bench press thing is getting tough - tortillas on the other hand....

Looks like a nice homemade brew would go nicely with it.

canid

it would. i've got vodka and banana mudslides but no brew at the moment [you'd be amazed how often i'm out of beer].
