I have 300-350 buck to get me a rifle. I need some suggestions on what you would think was the best bang for those bucks. I will be hunting hogs and white tails. Coot I sure would like to hear your feedback on this. Thanks.

How has it worked for you. I have a 500 12 guage for about 7 yrs and it has not failed me yet.

I will be honest that I have only shot about 100 rounds and bought it this spring, works good so far.
I have a 12 gauge mossberg for about 20yrs with no problems.

You can pick up a nice GPR 54 cal. front loader for 350 or less.

Can't go wrong with a 12 ga. shotgun, unless you get a good deal on a 308.

I would look for a Used "Ruger Mini-30" I would think a creap all around rifle like the Mini-30 which shoots the Cheap and available 7.62 X 39 Military round (Roughly equal to the 30-30 Winchester). You can buy factory hunting ammo also. With a low powered scope it is a great hunting, personal defense, rifle. And is used buy many countries around the world. Later if you had $99.00 you could add a Butler creek folding stock.

I agree the mini 30 is a good gun, have you thought about an SKS?

panch0

SKS might be too much money for me right now. I may be able to spend 400 if I am good. I will research that mini30 and I heard good things about the Marlin 336 and Mossberg AT100.

I like my mini 30. Ammunition relatively cheap and readily available.

I recently bought a '54 Russian sks in great condition that came with a leather sling, bayonet, fixed 10 round magazine, 30 round magazine, 64 rounds, the box and instructions manual all for $200. Though I bought it from a friend. :D

I have a mini-30 and the low recoil and cheap ammo is nice. Very accurate IMO. I don't consider it a big game killing machine though. I'm sure it will , but there's not a lot of powder behind the bullet. Had one bad experience with it deer hunting. Weak blood trail, near point blank range. ?? I don't think the bullet passed thru and after a mile long, day long search I never found the deer.

I really like the Ruger bolts and know people who love their Savage bolts. I don't think you can get a Ruger for 3-400 though. I'd go for a .270, or 308 if I had a choice. of course you can't go wrong with an ought 6.

I can't really make an experienced recommendation thoiugh, those are just rifles I'd like to have.:cool2: Winchester 30/30 lever makes a great bush gun though. And it leaves a blood trail.

Pancho,
You said that you would be hunting hog's and whitetail, but you didn't say what distance you would be shooting.

Around here, you could be hunting thick cover (under 50 yds), or in open fields, from a stand.(Possibly over 500 yds.)

I don't think I will need to shoot over 100" yrds.

Then I think the guys have given you good advice, with an SKS, or a used mini-30.

....but if you want to think outside the box....for about $400 you could get an M-44 mosin (carbine length, for the brush), a 91/30 (Kinda long, but you can shoot on out there, to ...oh...1,000+ yards.), a spam can of ammo (440 rounds of surplus), and still have about $50 left over for ice. (To put on your bruised shoulder.) :innocent:

I keep hoping I'll find one new SS one on the shelf some day. :confused1: I have a new stainless 30 round magazine for a gun I don't even own. :blushing:
Speaking of...how do those extended mags perform with that gun? I was always told they are hard to find. Stumbled upon that mag at a gun show for $25.

I've got several polymer 30 round mags for it. Have never had a problem.

Savage 110 series or Mossberge 4x4 bolt action in 30-06 or .308. They already come with a cheap scope which will be OK for now and upgraded later. As for scopes IMO Leupold and Nikon deliver the best value for what you pay. Burris scopes a close third and a little cheaper yet. The "HIGH" end Bushnell's are nice scopes too. Ziess, Swawarvski, and Lieca are great scopes but a whole lot too rich for my blood and not appreciably better than the others mentioned. Remember a good scope will cost as much as the rifle itself and will last waaaayyyy longer than those $65.00 cheapies. They will take more abuse with minimal loss of zero. "Best bang for the buck" will still have to figure in quality IMO. In my experience those brands mentioned deliver the goods. To be so bold as to "put a package together" for you I would go with a Savage 114 with a Burris Fullfield scope in 3x9x40. You may run a little over your budget but not much. You will never need to upgrade your rifle or scope with that set up. Stay safe.

Man! These pawn shops want to sell used rifles as if they were new. I mean some beat up looking things. I didn't find any of the ones listed in the two shops I visited yesterday. I am on it again today.

the pawn shops around here are a joke. gun dealers too. You get half or less when you turn it in and rthey try and get new or better price when selling. best bet is to find a reputable individual selling.

30/30 (dirty thirty) is an all around good bush gun for under 100 yards. Its what I use when hunting the same animals you are after. We generally stalk hogs and stand hunt deer. very versatile. haven't lost one yet (thankfully). scope was as much as the gun and still under $350 with rounds. both were brand new by the way, but that was years ago... probably lookin at around 400 nowadays
this is the gun http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/centerfire/336c.asp
throw a low power nikon on it and enjoy!

That Marlin is what I am thinking about getting. I love lever action rifles. It reminds me of one of my childhood favorite cowboy's "Lucas McCain" The Rifleman. I will probably stand in front of the mirror and do the fast shooting like he did.:blushing: Man the years are flying by.

I lucked out, earlier this year, and found a beat up marlin .44 mag. lever gun, in a pawn shop, for $250! :tongue_smilie:

For $350, you could get two guns: a Harrington & Richardson Topper Deluxe single shot 12 gauge for around $200, and perhaps have enough to get a Marlin 795 .22 semi-auto, which you can get for maybe $150.

I have both: the Topper is a very well made gun albeit only single shot. It has a 3.25" chamber to handle the really hot loadings. It has a nice weight; I hardly feel any recoil.

The Marlin is more accurate than I am.

If you like Lever Actions? take a look at HENRY ARMS! STEEL MADE IN AMERICA! I want one so bad, they even have the large loop "Rifleman". A great value price IMO.

Pancho, be certain to check your DNR regulations on what type of weapon you can use. We can't use a combo shotgun/rifle in Indiana, for example, and while we can use handguns for white tail there are limitations on the calibers. Just make certain you don't buy something that the law won't let you use.

I bought one of these and I am very pleased with it. I got the .308 Win caliber, put a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 w/BDC reticle on it and I'm ready for deer season. My son mounted the scope and sighted it in for me, because he had the tools to do the job right. The rifle was $290 and the scope was $150 from my usual gun store, but you could put a cheaper scope on one for 100-200 yard shots. If you want a long action, such as .30-06 or .270, they have an XL7 for the same price. Actually, they're the same rifle, except one is long action and the other is short action.

I have the same problem.I have 1 license left and decided to tackle the red tape and buy another rifle. Most of my hunting will be in the bushveld.Shots less than 100m at Kudu or Blue Wildebeest size game +-200-300kg.I am currently looking at 30-06 or 7x64. Rifles are very expensive and you know about all our red tape so I must make the right choice the first time.Your inputs will be appreciated.

Well I pulled the trigger:innocent: broke down and went to Academy and got me a Marlin 336 - 30.30. They had a 75 dollar rebate so I got it. Thanks for the feedback guys.

Congrats, Pancho! Thats a good "do everything" rifle. I think a Marlin 336, 30-30, is like a Ruger 10-22.......everybody should have at least one!:tongue_smilie:

Good choice. I love to hunt with my Marlin 336 in 30-30. It is what I use most of the time for white tail deer and hogs. Your gonna stay happy a long time with that oldtimer. I sure am. Best
