We mostly go through life in a state of semi-sleep. We are not alert to our surroundings. We make hundreds of assumptions every day. Study animals, they are alert 99.7% of the time, even when sleeping they are aware of sounds, and ground vibrations. Most of the accidents we incur are largely born out of assumptions. We assume drivers will stop for stop signs, will stay on the correct side of the road, etc.

I just notice how much of my life is based on assumptions, that when carefully examined, are lacking in a solid foundation. Just notice as you go through the day all the assumptions that our life and our survival is based on.:)

You have a valid point. BUT... why are we so unobservant? Because, for most of us, today was the same as yesterday, and the day before that, and so forth and so on.

thats an awfully big assumption to think that i assume Tomorrow will be like today. my life changes often enough that i dont usually assume that.

I dare say there are a LOT of animals eaten on a daily basis. A good portion, perhaps most, are eaten by other animals. Maybe they are eaten at the .03% of the time they aren't observant but the fact remains, they are still eaten. On the other hand, mankind is the most successful specie to inhabit this tiny planet so we must have something going for us. By the way, you missed that stop sign.

I think it is a product of evolution. In general, we have less to worry about on an immediate basis as far as personal security. Hence we can "afford" to be a bit less vigilant

familiarity breeds contempt. thankfully there are some assumptions i can count on. i like the knowlegde that you will stay on your side of the road and i will stay on mine. now that being said the hiway i drive has at least one head on fatal collision a year, but thats one out of how many that drive that hiway everyday, yes i am morre aware of vehicles but i am sure that even if at the last moment a car veers to me , not much i can do about it. if i had a heightened sense of awarenss all day long about everything, i would be mentaly and physically exhuasted everyday.
now that being said i sure am not going to assume that the government will come help me during times of emergency, so it all depends on your perspective i guess.

I think the more experienced we get the less assumptions we make. With animals, this process goes much quicker. As they are gaining experience at a much more rapid rate than humans. they gain experience with most every step they take.

A truck driver, or any professional driver, assumes much less about others driving habits than your casual, goin to the grocery store and such person does.

If every action we took made our chances of survival less or better we'd gain experience quicker and assume less.

True. Being at the top has its benefits. I take comfort in the fact that I know what I'm doing tomorrow (going to my college classes). And if something major was to happen (alien invasion, armageddon, ect), I would be surprised, but I'd rather not dwell on it today! Preparedness, not paranoia.

You know what assume means..... to make an a$$ out of you and me right. I think to assume is part of being alive. Most, as you have all stated, happens without us even realizing it. I assume that I will be alive to see my son graduate and get married. I assume that I will always have a home and food and water. But that doesn't mean that I will stop working or do nothing. I don't think making certain assumptions are dangerous, but some can be.

I think the word reasoning has to be added to this discussion. Reasoning tells them that the law says which side of the road to stay on, so they assume that people will. Reasoning must be accompanied with knowledge. Seeing a cute dog and petting it because you know it is friendly - and then seeing a cute bear ........ Without knowledge, your reasoning becomes flawed - and then those assumptions that get you in trouble occur. How many other animals are capable of reasoning?

See what I mean... Its the comfort zone... You need spiked (and change them every now and then) underwear to knock you out of your comfort zone.
And if that don't work for you, your family needs to hide your Twinkies, that will keep you alert and awake.

I can assure you without having tried it, that spiked underwear would put me outside my comfort zone. With some things you don't need boots in the field, or butts on the thorns to know about.

Sourdough has a very good point. How do we train ourselves to observe and wake up to be aware of what is around us at all times.

One of the most important times to be awake is when your focused on a target while knowing what else is behind your target.
Me and my son will let each other know if there's people in this area, a home in this area, livestock in this area, and/or whatever may be in the area that will narrow the field of fire.

In Thailand, there are basically no rules of the road and it is safer to assume the other guy will drive on wrong side of the road. People will always cut you off and the custom when passing other vehicles is to pass and hope if someone is coming the other way they will avoid you. The one with the right of way is the one with the biggest vehicle. Motorbikes drive on the sidewalk and go the wrong way on the highway. So better not to assume anything.
As far as being observant, I find that I am a lot more observant since my back injury. When I walk I am much more aware of my surroundings as now if I were to even just fall down it would be major problem.

Sorry you hurt your back and get well soon, I can totally relate to your awareness of anything you can trip on or walk into that would jar you back from my experience years ago.

Thanks Oly. went to hospital today and got MRI. Doc says he thinks I have herniated disk but not sure, but he gave me a shot and some pills and right now feels much better.
