Owning good/new maps is certainly essential, but I've found some online tools and tricks that might help others:
1) While researching line-of-site distances for walkie talkie purchases, I found this website, which working w/ Google Maps calculates distances WW between multiple points in both Miles & KM:
http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm
Read the directions first (I didn't :-) but shoud l have!
2) Google Maps added to its directions and distance calculations a "walking option." This shows distance and approximate time walking between points and interestingly, the walking directions are often different than driving. (Not necessarily a good thing, just something of note.) This is still in BETA which means, it's not perfected and the usualy small print applies. You can print-out the walking directions, with a large street map AND street views of each turn. So, in other words, if the directions have ten steps, along with them, you will get 10 pictures of the street scene, buildings, etc. This is especially helpful if it's a route not often traveled.
What I found was, several walking short-cuts to points-of-interest for me (large mall, airport, etc) with line-by-line directions and pictures. The new walking routes would cut time from my usual and well known driving routes. So, I printed-out a bunch of new maps. I pray I never need them.
